I am posting 2 watches today which I hope will be of interest to some people. Both are relatively modern and into the era of higher jewel counts (whether for marketing or accuracy is a matter of debate!).

The first is an open-faced silver (0.800) pocket watch by Zenith. This watch is marked 68-21 under the balance. I have not been able to find much information on this watch other than a few comments on forums. As I understand it, there was a small run of watches made in ?1962. Most were Zenith "Prima" with 17 jewels but some were Extra Prima with 21 jewels as with this example.

The two-tone case appears to be entirely 0.800 silver and not plated. Even the bow is stamped for 0.800 silver which is unusual in Continental European watches. Given the 80% purity I am assuming alloying with copper gives the pinkish tone.

Does anyone know anything more about these watches (when produced, how many etc)?

Stephen,

I believe the copper colour that you are observing is because the band and the pendant has been given a very thin gold plating, sometime described as a 'gold wash' and is described as 'galonne'. The colour of 800 silver is as you see on the rest of the case.

I thought that too but I can’t see any difference in the scratches. I’d expect to see a silver colour in the scratches if plated. On the other hand perhaps I do see this on the inside of the bow.

Hi,
I think it is a 20 micron gold plating on silver, in France it is called "Vermeil".
Here is the website of a friend Joël Duval "Zen" who passed away last January, you will find many things.
And I also advise you his Forum "Forum A Montres".

I forgot to mention his book "Zenith saga manufacture horlogère étoilée" which is certainly the Zenith bible, I advise you to buy it, it is the research of a whole life dedicated to this brand.

I’m sure it’s a great book. I learned French to age 18 and did well in my exams but that was a long time ago. Maybe I’ll get the book and improve my French at the same time!

So Enrico has kindly informed us that 6,000 68 (Prima 17 jewel) and 68-21 (Extra Prima 21 jewel) watches were made. What we don’t know is how many of each model were made. Presumably, fewer of the 21 jewel were made?
