Hi all. I think I've figured out that this is a Zaandam clock.

On the rear movement plate I read:
    • SBS Feintechnik 661
    • 66/39 PL 18,6 6 L
    • Made in West-Germany

After looking online for an hour at pictures of this clock, I didn't find a single one without a guy holding a globe at the top. Is there any significance to this guy with the spear that sits on my model?

    Thanks!

Gerbus, welcome to the message board.

As was "Atlas", carrying the globe, I believe your figure is another character of
Greek mythology. Don't ask me who it's supposed to be.

SBS Feintechnik, the maker of the movement was formerly known as Jos.Burger KG, Schonach,
the largest German producer of cuckoo clock movements.

Judging by the lady bumps I'd say the 'dude looks like a lady', probably Athena. The writing is Mennonite, 'Now to each his own'. the three small figures are Love, charity and Hope.

I doubt that's Athena. I don't think those lumps indicate female either - looks like breast plate armor to me.

It might be religious in nature, since faith, hope and charity are personality traits of the faithful. That would possibly put the soldier in line with the admonition at Ephesians 6:11-17.

I have never seen a Zaandam Zaanse clock with this figure on it. I think maybe it is not original to the clock. The atlas figures have been know to break off pretty easily in transit if not packed right as it is mounted by a single screw and nut through the top of the case.

I think it is Perseus holding Medusa's head. But, like Russel, I have never seen one on a Zaadam clock. But saying that, this clock is also a reproduction and anything goes.

I had thought of Perseus, but he is generaly depicted with a sword, not a spear. I tend to shimmystep's suggestion that it is Athena, who is often depicted with a spear. I also think the figure does have female breasts. What the figure is carrying, in that case, could be the aegis, which had Medusa's head in the center.

Is it a bad rendition of Poseidon, maybe?

The Zaandam clocks with Atlas and his globe have him standing on a bell that is used for the strike. I'm guessing this one has a bim-bam strike on chime rods mounted in the case.

I have the model with Atlas,
    • On the heavy bronze top front ornament 3 woman figures, representing faith, hope and charity, the side ornaments the city shield of Amsterdam.
    • On the front ornament there is a Dutch line that says "Nu elck sijn sin" which means to each his wish.
