I hope that this does not exist yet, if so, please apologize and merge.

I just won an auction for "Paul Philip Barraud" by Cedric Jagger, 1968, hardcover, including supplement. :excited:

Cheers, Bernhard

I just bought a copy of Henry Fried's "The Electric Watch Repair Manual". It is a softcover book published by Jadow and Sons in 1972. It often accompanied an analog Vigor electric/electronic watch meter. It contains the information that is in Bulova's Accutron service manuals, as well as ESA electronics, Caravelle, and Junghans.

The first few chapters comprise a handy section on basic electronics and how it applies to watches and clocks. I really need to spend time with that section. It really does start at the beginning. Cheers.

Just ordered: "The Chain Makers, A History of the Watch Fusee Chain Industry", by Allan White, 1967 :)

The postage from UK is more than the booklet ... :D. Will be interesting what German customs thinks :D

1970s reprint of Grimthorpe's treatise. Actually quite funny in places (though not intended to be) because of particular views and various tangents he wanders off on.
"[Watch] Case making is not horology, and I have nothing to say about it.."

The chain makers booklet is nice as written by a local Christchurch man. Have you got the larger book written by Sue Newman?

Hi Seth,

I've seen it said somewhere of Lord Grimthorpe that he had 'the strength of character of someone who seems never to have been afraid of winning an argument, even when he was wrong'.

Regards,

Graham

Bernhard:

Did you order a reprint of The Chain Makers book or did you get an original? The original is quite expensive but it actually includes a little bag stapled to the inside with a short length of chain. I was lucky enough to find an original copy some years ago.

I recall reading somewhere on here that Hans Staeger's "100 Jahre Präzisionsuhren von John Arnold bis Arnold & Frodsham" actually has more information on the Arnolds and the Frodshams than the Jagger and Mercer texts?

Hi Frank,

It is an original and had cost a few British Pounds (<10) only. The bag you mentioned was not with it, though.

I own a few books on English Clocks but for some reason had never yet read this one, which was published way back in 1978. I've always greatly enjoyed Brian Loomes' writing style, and occasionally have the pleasure of corresponding with him. In this book he tried to give a broad overview of clock-making in England over the centuries, as well as many personal thoughts and insights on the subject. Of great interest to me is the chapter on "clocksmiths" (self-taught clock makers in the provinces) and their work. At the end, he provides many useful insights on "collecting and investing" which, though a bit dated now, given what the collecting market has done since then (ups and downs), still makes for very informative and entertaining reading.

If you haven't yet read it, pick up a used copy (available rather inexpensively): you'll find things between its covers that are not written about anywhere else. I think it belongs on any English clock enthusiast's bookshelf.

Hi,

I've always found the Daniels book to be extremely useful, not only because it contains so much practical information on exactly how to begin important basic tasks, but he leads you in certain directions and then leaves you to apply your own intelligence to complete them. Plus David Penney's illustrations are just superbly clear.

Hi,

I've been very lucky recently to buy at auction a copy of 'Thomas Tompion - 300 Years' by Evans, Carter & Wright, (one of only 750 copies printed). I've been looking for a copy for ages, and fortunately I was able to collect it in person, because it's very heavy!

Regards,

Graham
