Given to me in lieu of payment by a clock repair client. A most agreeable transaction.

Wow, really beautiful Jim!
I don't think I've ever seen a glass case like this before.
Are those tiny nail heads making the design below the dial?

Never seen a case like that before, it's rather cool being able to see the whole movement.

Very interesting case. Nice acquisition!

J. E. Caldwell, listed on the dial, was a prestigious Philadelphia jeweler. Like Tiffany, they would contract with only the finest movement makers, Winterhalder & Hofmeier being one of them.

Your clock case was probably a custom order from Caldwell for a well to do customer.

Unfortunately for you, the Caldwell name does not command a premium as Tiffany would bring, but it appears you have a unique clock.

Regards.

I have actually seen a few of these on line and have really liked them. I love how the movement is on display. I suspect that the lower panel, below the dial, is a replacement from an original glass. I have even seen a 3 train Winterhalder in a case like this.

The small area below the dial is actually much like a speaker cloth. It is full of many small holes in a design. In a glass cased clock like this it's about the only way the sound can come out

Well i have found a Comp. And you are correct it has beveled glass below the dial. Now i need to find someone to make a replacement.

I have used Eric Hansen in Novato for this kind of work. If you can send him the panel in the clock to be used as a template, then it will fit properly. It will sound quieter than a clock with more open sides etc., but you have the back door with the grille. The picture below is of a clock case I made some time ago. It is completely 'glassed' in. Even the back door has glass (it went with the movement and is old). The bell strike was very hard to hear. Eventually, I changed out the bell with a very large bell and the sound is much better
