Yes, a rabbit might sneak up behind you and steal your drink! The cache's previous owner must have liked unusual picture cases. There's also this nice big Leon Sichel, nicely engraved with flowers.. and, what?

Is that a rat, or a big greasy hissing opossum? I'm saying 'possum, it's an American market watch. And look how tiny, the pictures make it obvious but in real life you almost have to know it's there. I had been working on it for a week on and off before I noticed, at first I thought it was just a flower petal. Like a secret picture.

I have already posted a griffon (post #4) and a long-necked elk (post #10). Here are some more "animals" in my collection.

A raven atop a crown, above a motto that means Death Rather than Dishonor, on a 14k OF Waltham-cased Waltham Model 1882 1-size Am'n Watch Co. grade watch.

You'll need to look closely to see the dog, duck, or mythical creature on this circa 1760 20k OF Freres Plan virgule

Dragons? on the bail of this 18k Elgin C.H. Hulburd in a case likely made by Perry Marks

Now I could be wrong, but I think there's a monkey's face from behind the flower.
It's arm is extended with fist curled closed, on the back of the Theiry case. Feedback
welcome. Monkey's face right of center near cross.

If not, then it's a good ole Rocky KWKS.

I had the same thought, but what else is it?
I believe that it is just poor workmanship from the engraver. His memory of what a deer is, is faulty and the image comes out in a different likeness than it should be...

Well, here's one even less special, ...
... and still more cows on a relatively recent watch. When this was gifted to me, new, in 1968 I rolled my eyes, but I realize it is now over 50 years old, still with its original box and papers. It has a decent quality 15 jewel Unitas movement. [Is it collectible yet?]

Since Jerry posted his gift I will post mine.
Here is one gifted to me new. I believe I got it in the 1980's

I have re gifted it to my youngest son.

I'm surprised it still opens and closes perfectly because I know when I got it I
must have "clicked" this hunter shut 100 times a day.

Looking through my Addison’s I found many birds ands butterflies. On one Nsize I spotted a dog on an artist palette and a horse and rider on a Ksize. In the corner of a garden on another Nsize I spotted a spider in a web. The last was tough to take a pic of as is only a 1/4 inch high.-Cort

I know that elk are pretty common, but I stumbled across a couple more that I have. Both are Dueber cases housing Elgin movements. The one on the left is a 16-size coin silver "Bourbon" hunter case and the one on the right is a 6-size gold-filled hunter.

I think this AWCo case with the cat's head, perhaps that of a panther or a lion, on both lids is interesting. The case came to me housing 19 jewel nickel KW16 movement SN 501,586 with gold dome, Fogg's cam (tadpole) regulator and an unusual flat hairspring. I since have seen one or two other AWCo cases with the same decorative motif.

Here is a lovely songbird on my friend's 14K piecrust edge N Size Howard Model 1883 (Series VII) case with an "E.H.&Co." trademark and a sailboat gliding on a mountain lake in the background. The signed personalized Moorhouse dial with old English capitals spelling "John C. Butler" and the matching and very rare old English style Howard signature make a really impactful combination with this case.

With this posting of two more watches, I think I've shown my entire menagerie. These two watches are discussed in https://mb.nawcc.org/threads/two-special-quarter-repeaters.172274/.

The first of these two hunter watches is an unsigned 18k grande et petite sonnerie trip quarter-repeater that features a retriever with what looks like a dead bittern in its mouth.

1656948618243.png

The second is this 18k quarter-repeater/perpetual calendar with retrograde days and moonphase dial, probably by B. Haas Jeune. One cover has a pair of fierce lion or leopard heads in applied white gold. The same pair are engraved on the other cover.

That first one is truly a "hunting case."

Here's a rather fanciful butterfly on an Illinois KW.

I spent some time studying entomology when I was younger, and I can tell you that this butterfly is not anatomically correct for any North American species.

I still like it.

I've seen some pretty strange deers and horses on watch cases too.
