WARNING - Extreme, multi-layered geek humor follows. (Or at least what passes for "humor" in my addled little geek brain. I've been giggling about it, and my wife just shakes her head. (In pity, perhaps?))

I've been overhauling several Accutrons for a customer. The Service Manual for the 214 series says "Unscrew the Cell compartment cover using a U.S. dime." I wondered about that for a while - why is it so specific? What happens if you use a Canadian dime? I believe I figured it out. I'll post the question today (the last sentence before my name), and the answer tomorrow. First person to answer the question wins a dead Accutron cell.

The tuning fork in an Accutron runs at 360 hertz. If you use a stethoscope you can hear the very clear tone. According to my guitar tuner, it is between an F and an F-sharp.

My expectation is that using a Canadian dime will confuse the tuning fork, and make it run at 440 hertz.

Why is that the likely answer?

    Glen

I have heard that the Accutron tuning for pitch is C natural. Not calling you wrong. That is what were told when I took the Accutron service training course in, get this, 1964! And, doesn't the Accutron Accuquartz tuning fork hum at about 440 vps? As to the Bulova instructions to use a dime for the battery hatch? I don't have the answer you are looking for. But I do know that the Canadian mint sent a directive to Bulova dealers telling us that using the dime to remove the hatch cover was a contravention of the law! I doubt it made any difference! I await an answer, from you or someone else more clever than me! :p

Because there's no such thing as a "Canadian Dime".

    In Canada it's a "10-cent piece"....officially, anyway.

Perhaps the U.S. dime is non-magnetic and the Canadian 10-cent piece is?

Or the U.S. dime is currently worth more than the Canadian 10-cent piece?

Ok, if my first reply wasn't enough.... 440 Hz is concert A, the note the lead Oboe plays for the rest or the orchestra to tune to.

    Relatively simple math 12*log2(440/360) ~= 3.5 -- so 360 Hz is 3.5 semitones lower than A ie halfway between F & F# as Glen's guitar tuner shows.

    Nutjob

And we have a winner! I'd hoped that Will's first response was a play on "A". Do you want the dead power cell? Geek stuff, eh?

If you use a Canadian dime, the watch will end up keeping Canadian time instead of US time.

Since this topic has wandered away from Accutron battery hatches and the difference between Canadian "ten-cent pieces", U S "dimes", US time, and "Canadian time", I submit the following! The Canadian Pequegnat Clock company actually made a Canadian Time model. And to the best of my knowledge, it kept pretty much the same time as the supposed U S time!

Somehow, my attempt at a clever response to a previous post has been misinterpreted as meaning I should "lighten up"! Actually, to pat myself on the back, I though I was being rather clever!:excited:

    Glenn,

Not everyone interpreted that post the way I meant it. But at least you did, and I thank you for that! But actually, we Canucks have to tolerate a fair amount of good natured ribbing on this MB. That was my attempt to give back as good as we get! Eh?

OF COURSE it was a test!

Then again, it was not a "California compliant" test. Otherwise it would have had the question, the answer, and a space with your name already hand-written in that space, and large lettered instructions to turn the test in to the instructor when you are finished reading the instructions for 100% credit and that only 80% credit will be given if you don't turn it in.

But, it was admittedly a "geek" test so it probably left a bunch of code out for us to beta test and debug.

The guy that wrought the manual probably had a dime in his pocket and most likely the common person that would open it would not have the special tool the dime fit so that is what went into the manual.

    Good grief....

I'd be surprised if after reading all this, any Accutron anywhere could be bothered to tell the correct time at all just out of spite !! lol....(yes, Accutrons can read...it's a little known fact.....)

Wish I'd won the dead cell....always wanted one of those......:(

Time to dust off an old joke! There is an Accutron that can read the time. It's an Accutron repeater, otherwise known as a humdinger!

Here's my last Accutron with it's new power cell 'in-waiting'....I'll probably never get know if it ever worked.

Nah...just send me the dime ;)

Also, I think an antique early 20thC silver sixpence would do the trick too.....but probably confuse the heck out of the movement though....

Actually, that watch has since been moved on...so hopefully it will now be active and telling it's own story via C major, A major, or F minor 7th.
