If you define a watch manufacturer as a company that makes its own movements there are not many to choose from.

I know it is very subjective but my personal favourite for design and quality of finish is Lange.

If I had to stick to a budget then I would go for Zenith.

    From my very limited perspective:
American made wrist watches: Hamilton by far.
    Expensive Swiss watches: Rolex, LeCoultre
    Cheap Swiss watches: Bulova, Gruen

    New stuff? One word: Lange

Old stuff? nothing better than the "PAtek of America, Hamilton or model 72 Walthams. (Has anyone studied those ultra high grade "0" size Hamiltons with high grade ultra polished plates and HUGE gold jewel cups??
    TAKE THAT PATEK!

Sleepers on cheaper old stuff? 1930's Bulova's, 1930's Gruen's, some Longines 1950's watches when they were associated with LeCoultre and Vacheron...

One man's 2 cents.... Jeff Hess
