Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

What was originally in this case?

Just picked this case up in an estate lot. It had a Waltham model '88 in it. There weren't any Hamilton movements in the box, so I'm wondering what really was originally in this case?

The case style and markings on the back are typical to the 22 jewel grade 4992B.

An 88 model had to look really out of place in there!

It did... Especially since it was a hunter. I was actually surprised that it fit. Someone also went to some work to make a short model '88 stem for it.

This really surprises me since there are so many Hamilton 4992B Master Navigational Watches in warn cases or modified cases, where the engraving has warn or been buffed off. Good cases are harder to find than the movements that go into them.

It has long been my understanding that the Waltham model '88 was an odd size for most Ameican 16-size cases. I wonder if the case had to be modified to fit the '88?

Or, was the 88 modified to fit the case!

It was done so well that I didn't notice it at first. However, there was another identical case (without the Hamilton markings) in this box, so I was able to compare. Sure enough, the case ring has been cut slightly larger and, of course, a hole drilled for the movement pin. Given the fact that there were several other 16s cases in this estate lot, this was a rather odd choice to modify for this model '88.
