I got this chunk of metal yesterday and it seems to work well after I replaced the first battery I installed without checking it. It's a Swissonic sold under the Elgin name with an ESA 9154 movement, an early try to use a battery for power instead of a mainspring. It must have been successful; I have a couple sold with Watham on the dial and a Bulova Caravelle and a Tradition from Sears, and there probably are other brands that used the movement.

    Hello,

You’ll have to excuse my ignorance as this is my first time posting on this forum. My father is a bit of an antiques collector, and I developed an interest in clocks and watches as a young child as a part of your typical bonding experience. Usually while he was busy accumulating items such as furniture, cars, automotive related products and jewelry - I would always be allowed to wander on my own. I would typically gravitate towards clocks, watches and as I got older - the odd vintage car from time to time.

I was restricted to my allowance and my meagre employment money, so whatever I could acquire within that budget was mine to keep and take home. Well after all these years, my father finally reminded me that maybe it’s time that I start taking possession of my collection and doing something with it. In short, he wanted some of his storage space back as I have a house of my own - “so come and get your crap so you can fill up your own damned rafters”.... fair enough. Message received, Dad.

As I start going through my collection, I will try to post what I have on here and ask a few silly questions about my various pieces.

I’ll start with this 1971 Bulova Accutron N1 that I randomly chose to wear these last few days. 18k Heavy Gold Electroplated Men’s watch. It has a 10k Rolled Gold case back. Black and gold watch face with gold tone watch hands. It possesses the 218O movement with a 33.75 mm wide case. A mere battery swap brought it back to perfect working order. The Crystal is a little scratched up, but it has been keeping perfect timing so far.

Nothing special, but I received a substantial amount of comments on it.

Here's another of the Vostock Amphidians. I don't know the age but it looks fairly recent and the dial is different from the one posted by pmwas. It indicates on the dial that it has 31-jewels, seems like overkill on the jewels. The movement is automatic. I haven't had the back off yet and don't know if it has a truly Russian-made movement.

Tej Amphibian shown is an ordinary Amphibian model - made quite recently. The movement is the 31 jewel Russian in house caliber 2416B. In the jewel count there are 10 ruby rollers in the reversers so that's why there are so many.

On my wrist - a Raketa watch from circa 1980 - one of Soviet first generation Quartz watches.

    IMG_3439.JPG

The watch has multiple surface scratches and some deeper cuts (shame), but is on good overall condition. Notice the cut plastic glass:

    IMG_3434.JPG

Inside - first generation Soviet Quartz caliber.

    IMG_3432.JPG

This was technologically advanced at the time, but rather unreliable and consumes large amount of power (about 6 month battery life or so). It was not AS bad as the infamous Transistor (Bulova accutron rip-off), but still has a rather bad opinion and indeed, many of them are found in dead-for-good condition.

Unlike Russian mechanical calibers, this has a true quickset for the day of the month indication, while the day of the week still has to be set by turning hands.

This unit is operational and keeps time.

    Late Waltham

I picked this wristwatch up about 5 years ago at a local vintage show. It has a 17 jewel manual movement signed AS1686 signifying Swiss manufacture. This timepiece was likely produced in the 1950s as Waltham in-house movement production dwindled, ultimately leading to the demise of the watch division.

The red pointer on the central sweep nicely matches the red Waltham logo. It's an utilitarian time keeper which cost me twenty bucks plus another C-note for servicing including a replacement crystal, I having retrieved it from my watchmaker earlier today. I don't know whether the expansion bracelet is original to the watch but nevertheless it's certainly evocative of the 1950s.

This one was on my long lost blog - it is a remake of a 1950s model. I used to have a busted 1950s original when I was in high school and now I have this. Lovely watch :)

Hampden distant cousin. These watches were made up till 1950 to fill the gap in USSR wristwatch market, as the modern, small Pobeda wristwatches were still too few...

Tissot PR 100 Automatic with Date

A modern entry level wristwatch featuring great bang for the buck.

All stainless steel including the bracelet, water resistance of 100 metres, sapphire crystal, exhibition back with yellow rotor. Oh and a 25j Swiss self-winding movement. Plus lumed main hands with lumed square indicators at the hours.

This would be a great timepiece to gift to a high school lad. But I wonder how many of them would wear it!

I’ve pulled another one out of storage and tried it on today. I received a substantial amount of compliments on it. I will take it for proper servicing soon, and will open it up and try to date it with the serial number when time permits. Appears to be a Mido Multifort Powerwind from the late 1950’s. I’m slowly trying to sort out my collection so you will have to bear with me.

    Hello All,
I am a Longcase regulator collector and whilst at an auction I noticed this watch. My regulator was not up to much, so I bought this Ball watch instead
It appears to be a watch that is manufactured by a company that started out making railway watches. Anyway for £300 it looks like decent acquisition.

As is clear in the full-sized version of the photo, it's a Seiko; a Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT.

Found this Longines this morning in a junk basket of watches, for a buck! It was too cool looking to pass up. It fired right up when I wound it, so I figured I'd wear it for the day. The whole center of the dial rotates for the hour hand, maybe they thought it didn't run and was missing hands. 10k gold filled case.

I don't know anything about it yet, but I like it!
