This 25j self-winder features a gold-plated square case. The matching gold-tone dial harmonizes well with the case, while the black date numerals in the window at 3 o'clock match the all-black handset & hour markers.

Another of my father's watches which I inherited, I especially like that the hours are depicted in Roman numerals.

Really nice watch. It has been built in 1971/72 and was sold for $59.99. Just in case you did not know this.

    Thanks.

I thought my father would have purchased the watch in the late 1960s or during the 1970s. I very much appreciate that you were able to nail the date down.

I have at least two ads from these two years showing the watch.

This one is from the Edmonton Jorunal, Nov, 30th., 1971, but Woodward's had this ad in other newspapers as well, for example in the Calgary Herald the same day. It is pictured upside down, so Ifirst thought it does not have a date...
    upload_2019-3-30_18-23-40.png .

Again from the same Jeweler, Woodward's in the Edmonton Journal,October 25th, 1972, this time in the correct position and a bit more detailed picture:

    upload_2019-3-30_18-31-23.png

I now realize myself that both ads are from Canada just like you and probably your father. So it might be possible that this model has been sold in Canada only. Since the early 50th the Canadian sales organization was independent from the US operations and they definitely had models which were Canada only.

    Hope this helps

I was not aware that Gruen Canada had separated from the American entity. My father was a Canadian resident thus, your hunch that the square 25j autowind Precision was a Canadian model, is very likely correct.

I see from the adverts that the watch appears to have come from the factory with an expansion bracelet. I will keep any eye out for a matching Greun expansion bracelet to replace the leather strap currently on the watch.

Thank you very much for posting these Gruen adverts.

I'm wearing my first vintage Elgin today.

    Nice 17j 4/0 cushion case.

I was so proud of this thing when I got it. Cleaned and oiled it, shined it up. It even says cased and timed by Elgin inside the back of the case . I came to learn that the 17 jewel movement had no business being in this case. Oh well. It's like putting a 350 ci engine in a cavalier.
Apparently this was part of the thrift series and should have a 7 jewel movement.

Still it's a great watch in my opinion, and runs perfectly. Regardless of originality.

Just finished working on this Rotary. The impressively pickled dial actually looks terrific in reality, helped by the raised batons and matching hands. The movement's a 17J AS/ST 1950/51 - I'm guessing from some time in the 60s - and runs reasonably well. It has one of those accursed semi-recessed crowns that are almost impossible to wind... I was going to sell it but it's probably near-worthless.

    Elgin Self-Winding

Picked this wristwatch up yesterday at a local thrift store after ensuring that it set, wound & ran. After paying for it I placed the watch onto my free wrist, as the safest place to carry it. The automatic movement obviously functioned as my new toy kept time for the remainder of the day & continues ticking away.

The rotor identifies the movement as a Grade 813 making it a so-called "Swiss Elgin", for its stainless steel case encapsulates a Felsa 4000N 17-jewel Swiss movement "cased and timed" by Elgin.

I would date the watch to the mid-1960s. At 30 mm. this watch is neither too big nor too small. It simply sits on the wearer's wrist with its central sweep & discretely displays the time, no complications not even a date window. The "waterproof" case would in practice have allowed 5 years between servicings, no fuss no bother. Just a nicely wearable wristwatch marketed by a venerable old American watchmaking company on its last legs.

I've been looking in thrift stores for years for mechanical watches whether for the pocket or for the wrist. Yesterday was the first time that I came across anything. For 35 bucks Canadian I couldn't refuse, that's about $25 US.

They also had a Bulova sitting there, looked like from the 1960s too & it likely came from the same source. It was priced identically however the winding stem was missing so I couldn't test its functionality. I said to myself that I already had "too many watch projects on the go" & left with just the Elgin.

    I'll keep snooping about ...

Another awesome 7 jewel Elgin. I just love the look of this! 4/0 movement, gold filled case. Probably hasn't been out of the box in over a year, so tonight was the time. Worn with suit, and pocket watch lol.

Today i have a pretty neat German watch. It's a helbros incivcible, featuring The puw-61 in 17 jewels. Used to be lumed hands, nice dial that's smooth in the center and textured on the outer rim. Silver markers. Case is a good size, probably 32mm ( my caliper died) . Definitely needs a new strap, I don't know what I was thinking with this one. Anyways it ways runs spot on, can't go wrong with German!

Thanks for reading, have a good day.

Ok... Last 6498 project I promise. I really went overboard a while back. It was just so much fun with all the different cases and dials and hands.

I tried to model this one from a picture of a trench watch I found. Its pretty close! Luminous dial and blued luminous hands. Unitas 6498. Stainless waterproof case with screw down crown.

Did the zip line at 7 springs today, and it's rainy, and I don't like to take anything vintage or antique when it's going to get beat up or wet. This chunk of stainless steel is a Seiko recraft. Powered by the 7s26. It has taken a lot of abuse from me and just keeps on ticking away. The only complaint I have is you can't wind it with the stem, but honestly, a few twists of the wrist and it fires right up. It was inexpensive, and will probably live forever, lol. One of only a couple new watches I own.

I'd date this elegant manual wind timepiece from the 1950s or 1960s, sporting a black Italian calf-skin strap. The signature on the dial is spectacular. Back then, Lucien Piccard was a vastly different watch manufacturer compared to the post-Quartz Crisis survivor that it became.

    I really like the dial.

I really love the back cover.

    Lucien Piccard Dress Watch (cont'd)

    Thanks all for the interest.

So I popped the hood & discovered that my Lucien Piccard is a triple-signed watch:

    Lucien Piccard Mvt.jpg

The engine is a Swiss 17j movement some 25 mm in diameter or 10.5 - 11.5 ''' however, I don't see any manufacturer's markings. The "AXU" import code is consistent with Lucien Piccard &/or Paul Ditisheim.

Looking closely between the escape wheel & the edge of the movement, there's an area that looks like it was milled out. Betcha that the movement maker's identifiers were there when the ebauche was delivered to the LP plant, where they were removed.

OK so now I need everyones help to figure out who manufactured this movement ...

So this was the first Waltham I ever bought, including their pocket watches. I just liked it. Illinois Spartan case. 0 size 7 jewel movement. Strange dial, maybe melamine? Composite? No idea.

It's not fancy or anything like the watches you all show, but I just really like these earlier american wrist watches.

Of course the mainspring went on me today, at 3:40 pm, according to the watch. Im kicking myself for not previously changing it.

    Omega Geneve Automatic

I thought I'd fire up my late father's 24j self-winder to wear on my wrist this weekend. This Omega model would have been produced in the late 1960s judging from its serial number. The gold, white & black color scheme just gives it that elegant dressy look & feel that seems to have fallen by the wayside in the succeeding decades. All it does is tell its owner the time in a nice way, which time it keeps so very well.

I got this Glashutte carry watch today in Glashutte on annual antique watch market there.
Let's face it - I just did not have the money to get what I wanted, so I bought what I could afford ;)
It's an early GDR piece with scarc-ish low grade cal 61 movement, made in the period Glashuette factory was being reirganised after WW2. These are almost impossible to get in good condition, and - make no mistake - this one is fully re-done, case and dial. But it dose make it a nice, classy carry watch in fact, as genuine one would be too good and precious to wear...
Had some trouble with the balance (poorly restaffed) and stripped balance bearing threads, but I coped :)

This is the 2nd watch I got in Glashutte. Paid 30 euro - I think a bargain price for it :)

Well, this seems like a fine place to make my first posting - today it's a Sinn 142 Ti. Long ago I fell in love with the Speedmaster Pro and knew I had made it as an adult when I could afford to buy one. I wore it happily for years until it needed to be serviced; that took a long time so I looked around for something to wear in the interim, and fell into "collecting" watches that had something to do with space exploration. Hence the Sinn, and the Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute (lovely but largely impractical), and Omega X-33.
