What are YOU wearing today?

Jon,

Any idea who held the patent to that system? Seems like a lot of people used that same system. Did JL make these as ebauches? Or license the tehnology?

What are YOU wearing today?

Jeff-
According to Jaeger-LeCoultre's "The Manufacture's Book of Timepieces" (Patents section) dated 2004/2005, they patented CH 287 930F in 1950 for the "Cal. 497 weight and power reserve".

I don't know about the others.

Mine has VXN on the movement which indicates some Vacheron influence. The finish on these movements is wonderful. Either Jeager- LeCoultre or Vacheron built these. I like to think Vacheron made them to get experience for their upscale line.

What are YOU wearing today?

A poor man's Ro1ex:

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SgAAAMQWtV9zICouBKpjKbMktnCgS9vaomy2XdMSVUOtAtJqJQtOKIbES5D1NUdJQtVtbNMTQFZ67tvt9IemGGAejQ!PnyI!7PnY6QbBDSC2Sqc7MkBWAQ/Hamilton%20dial.jpg?dc=4675487507395580865

An old 992. Cased in brass, it looks like a rustbucket, but I'm a movement man anyway.

The movement. Ain't it a swell?

What are YOU wearing today?

All,

I just got back from the Pacific North West regional in Kent, Washington. A meandering trip back that took us through Vancouver, B. C. Got to bed at 2:15 am today (Thursday). I just took off my seldom worn, mid-'80s Rolex Daytona Cosmograph which I have owned since new. I like to wear that one at regionals! It creates a "buzz" in the room among the dealers. I also wore my GMT Master II, and my newly acquired two-tone Waltham 1883 which I just finished returning to health. Gained two minutes in the 7 days we were away. But I'll work on the regulation, and it'll get better.

What are YOU wearing today?

Thanks, Doug. I bought it from Bryan Girouard at Art Deco Wristwatches this past Monday. Here's the link to the full description:

http://www.artdecowristwatches.com/page7.htm

Bryan takes excellent photos and I've been trying to get him to divulge his setup in detail so I can get better shots of my collection. When he lists on Ebay, he gets some of the best prices because of his photos.

What are YOU wearing today?

Ron, Jon,
I love the bumper automatics as well. Many firms used this system. I understand there were at least two competing "bumper systems". Is this true?

Or was there one main ebauche maker who shared or licensed this technology? I picked up a LeCoultre with a Bumper auto recently.

Jon, were these companies competing, sharing or copying this technology? And idea?

What are YOU wearing today?

Hi Jeff,

I don't know who makes the movement, but I think that UG made a lot of their own movements.
I also have a '50s LeCoultre "Master Mariner" that has a bumper auto. Very reliable. The UG, unfortunately, looks beaten up (I bought it at an NAWCC mart several years back.). Some knucklehead tried to open the screw-in back with the wrong tool and it's all scratched up. Runs pretty reliably, though, and a watchmaker I know says that UG's bumper autos from that era were superior to Omega's bumpers.

Jeff- Ahem, your 100?? LOL

I'm wearing my stainless steel "Omega Automatic Seamaster Professional 600". A true professional diver's watch due to its large asymmetrical case, square shaped screwdown crown and locking bezel feature via a red plastic/nylon button. Mine also has the unusually large Omega stainless steel bracelet instead of the red nylon band often depicted.

I don't dive but the locking crown and bezel features must have been necessary when headed 600 meters underwater. Jacques Cousteau or his crew may have worn one like it 30 years ago.

I don't know the answer to your question and I like ROnC's answer.

I surmise that there was a lot of patent sharing and little nose to nose competition. Also at thai time JLC and UG were very much in the manufactureing business so I stronly suspect that there was a lot of cross licensing.

Also I recently saw another nice marked Vacheron with the VXN ebauche mark. The bumper JLC automatics have nobility in their pedigree.

As to the topic I am giving some wrist time to a newly acquired Movado 21j "Chronometre" .

I've experimented with photographing small detailed items, and the best results I've had were taken outside in natural light with the closeup setting on my digital camera.

Re: What are YOU wearing today?

I notice many dealers and sellers photograph their watches with the CRYSTALS REMOVED. While I appreciate being able to see the dial set inside the bezel, everyday reality is that the watch will not look that way when the owner wears the watch.

IMO, it's good to provide one photo of the dial with the crystal removed but if all your photos are taken without the crystal, it is questionable practice. All you do is get the buyer worked up with visual imagery that is not realistic and unfulfillable. Some buyers who buy on impulse will be disappointed when they see the watch in person. Sometimes they will not even realize why.

I like it better when the seller includes photos of the watch dial taken with the crystal in place. My Türler OMEGA was advertised and photographed only with the crystal in place. The photos were excellent and I paid the seller, "Objects of Virtue", a decent price for the watch. The only flaw in the watch is the non-original seconds hand which is clearly shown.

The seller used shadowless artificial lighting and it was perfect. Here are 2 photos from his ad. I think natural lighting is also good but not to show all the details with. Natural lighting is good for showing natural colours and realistic setting. IMO, a good ad should have both natural and artificial lighting shots.

Three reasons why natural lighting works well are:

  • high light intensity = no shakes, sharp image
  • natural colour temperature = no strange colours
  • if the watch is modeled well, the strap and case will also be shown off nicely

Some sellers also seem to Photoshop all the scratches off the watch cases - very dishonest practice. If you look at the images from my watch's seller, he did not even sharpen the original photos. They are as originally taken.

For the first time in 35 years, I'm wearing a watch. I have been intrigued by the Seiko Spring Drive watches; I made the mistake of going into a local retailer that carries them, and found one I couldn't leave in the store.

I'm a lot poorer than I was when I went to work this morning, but it's a beautiful watch, and I'm thrilled.:)
