I'm thinking of purchasing Balcombs' books - 'The Clock Repair Primer' & 'The Clock Repair First Reader'.

I was just wondering if somebody would be kind enough to post the chapter headings of the two books in this thread?

I've looked on the internet and at the reviews of horological books on this forum but have found nothing of this nature.

Thanks to anyone able and willing to help.

    Hi Teifi,
Balcomb's books are highly regarded as being among the best clockmaking beginner's books (see First 6 books in clock repair and building?) but, as they're getting rarer and rarer, they often reach impossible prices.
    Here we are:

    Balcomb, Philip E.
    The Clock Repair Primer
    The Beginner's Handbook
Tell City, IN, Tempus Press, 5th ed. 1992, 158 pages (1st ed. 1986)
    1. Hands
    2. Dials
    3. Pendulums
    4. Pendulum Suspension Devices
    5. Examining the Movement in the Case and Correcting Superficial Problems
    6. Basic Tools and How To Use Them
    7. Taking the Movement Out of the Case
    8. Examining the Movement Outside the Case
    9. Striking Movements
    10. Weight Movement Disassembly Cleaning and Reassembly
    11. Spring Movement Disassembly and Reassembly
    12. Repairs After Disassembly
    13. Clock Parts Suppliers

    Balcomb, Philip E.
    The Clock Repair First Reader
    Second Steps for the Beginner
Tell City, IN, Tempus Press, 9th ed. 2006, 159 pages (1st ed. 1991)
    1. Bench Practices
    2. Clock Movement Holders
    3. Inexpensive Special Tools
    4. Metals Used in Clocks
    5. Cuckoo Clock Repair
    6. Chiming Systems
    7. Anniversary (400 Day) Clocks
    8. Wood Case Finish Repair and Restoration

    Happy reading :D

    Hi ocram,

Many thanks for responding to my post with the chapter headings of Balcomb's books. I imagine this information may prove useful to others also who like myself are wanting books that provide a good foundation to build upon.

    Much appreciated,
