I just bought a bench and noticed three holes about 1/2 or so dia in the front edge ofthe table, there are two on either side of the lathe and one about six inches in on the right. Now i figure they must be there for a reason I just cant figure out what for. Any suggestion?

Power from the driver may go to a second shaft that may also have step pulleys for different speed ranges. Some set ups are direct from the motor to the head stock. This set up allows for more speed / torque ranges.
You will see the on the Bay very often.

Here is a pic from the web

The only things I can think of would be extended working surface, padded arm rests, or removable fence to catch parts.
