Hi - Just wondering whether anyone else is interested in, or researching or collecting, the Waltham Giant?
This grade is an occasional sight on the uk ebay site - sometimes cased, sometimes orphaned. As far as I recall, they do all fall within the range (19397001-19403000) that the lookup comes up with.

This appears to be a variant of the "Equity" - which in turn is (confusingly) sometimes described as a grade of 16s model 1908, and sometimes as a 17s model in its own right. Perhaps there is already a thread open on that somewhere. It would be interesting to know whether the Giant has interchangeable parts and/or cases with some or all other Equity variants?

Anyway, here's a pair of Giants - one openface and one hunter, both running nicely.

Also, for comparison - a pair of Equity's - the rather pretty grade 611 (openface, running) and the standard item (hunter which is a bit unusual for an Equity, not running, and inhabiting a rather nice Dennison Star case.)

Interesting! It seems from the observations like there's a whole extra run of 1500 of them (19743501-19745000) recorded as grade [blank] or "Missing data". I guess we found the missing data then. I assume there could be others :)

Dave, am I seeing a gold centre wheel on your Waltham Giant? I ask as I assumed such wheels were only used on the higher grade, 19+ jewelled movements.

Clearly I have much to learn.

    Regards,

    Jay.

Yes, the center wheel is gold (or, at least, plated) and has rounded spokes, both marks that usually indicate higher quality.

GIANTs that turn up appear to all be either 7J or 15J. Here is an example of the latter. I have a hunter 15J around here somewhere so I'll post photos of that one too whenever it next jumps into my hand...
