Hi all,
have just finished a restoration on a German Vienna Regulator and have used gut line on the barrels for authenticity - The trouble I have with this movement and for that matter others of this type is that to return to the customer, once the weights are removed the gut lines spring and get tangled with cross overs on the drums.
Has anyone come up with a good idea to keep the gut lines taught and in place on the drums until the weights can be reinstalled at the customers premises.

Regards candix - Australia

I use twist ties on the gut to hold it tight on the spool. Several twist ties used down the length of the gut between the spool and the pulley will help keep it from tangling.

Long thin rubber bands stretched from the pulley bail down to a single carpet tack, at the center of the bottom board, will do the deed.

This can often be made to work better with a small opened gem clip at the carpet tack. Just open the gem clip and twist it once around the carpet tack. This will form a hook, left and right. Loop a rubber band to the pulley bail, extend by looping on more bands if necessary, down to the hook. The necessary joining "loop" is called a 'lark's head'. Willie X

You can use a bit of packing polystyrene that is about 3 x 2 x 2 inches, just wind up with the weight on till the line cuts in a little when it hits the base plate and take the weight off.

Hi again,
Thank you for your suggestions, some may help.
I guess I wasn't clear of my intentions - I have the movement at my shop but the case is still at the customers home. Therefore the problem is to have the gut wound correctly on the barrel and transport the movement back to the customer without the weights attached but with the gut still wound tightly on the barrel - to put tape on the spools would be very difficult to remove once in the case there is little room to get to the spools

It is easier to let the gut out almost all the way, tape it or twist tie it, and when you get it in the case, you can hang the weights and wind them up while watching the gut as it winds on the spool. Some people wind them up almost to the top and insert a piece of styrofoam between the spool and the pulley. When you get it to the case, you hold pressure on the pulley while removing the styrofoam and then hang the weight.

Hang the weights first and then remove the polystyrene.

Out of the case ... short lengths of half inch pipe insulation is good. Pool noodles are too big but it's the same idea. Look up 'transporting with pool noodles' basicly what wow and jimmy just said. Noodle on, Willie X
