Vevey - Tour St Jean
Vevey is a town in Switzerland in the canton Vaud, on the north shore of Lake Geneva., not far from Lausanne. The photo is of the clock tower of the church of Saint-Jean in Vevey.
John: Thank you for your comments.
A few guesses about this picture at 12:05. The Tower is facing almost due East and it is in the Late Spring or Early Summer by the Shadows. Electric Trolleys and narrow streets. Bycicles as an alternate means of transport. The postcard looks to be from the '50s or early '60s.
IMO, the clothing worn by the people would date the photo between 1900 and 1915.
The history of the electric trolly on Wikipedia:
states that the first electric tram was tested in St. Petersburg in 1881, but it had tracks raised above the street. Metal tracks level with the street developed in the early 1900's and would have taken several years to deploy around the world.
I think Pastime is correct on the date of this photo.
RobertG - I believe John is correct. He did some nice detective work by comparing with Known dated images he has by comparing Hats and Clothing.
I, for one, would like to thank you for sharing your phenomenal postcard collection of old public timepieces!
It is really fun seeing these old clocks.
I am going through my photos of clocks I took in France early this year to see if at least one or two are of clocks you posted. It would be fun to compare then to now.
Thank you again.
