Just picked up this small unusual Japy movement, It has the most unusual suspension set up I’ve ever seen, has anyone else ran into this? or any comments? I have posted it elsewhere ,and people seem to think it is a silk thread set up, I have owned many silk thread Movements, I don’t think this started out as one, maybe a transition piece? …I feel however it is original, maybe experimental:???: It’s the most unusual suspension set up I’ve ever seen, has anyone else ran into this before?? or any comments I have posted it elsewhere and people seem to think it is silk thread .,,I feel however it is not, as I have owned many silk threat suspensions, The regulating adjustment rod that goes through the movement is pinned on to a brass collet, A very thin soft suspension spring” coils“ around it and goes down through the narrow brass block the only thing missing( I feel) is the blocking pin on the bottom of the spring to hang the pendulum on… it definitely will move up and down when you turn it but I have never seen such a set up and I feel this original any comments or other pictures would be appreciated:?|

I have not seen this either. If the spring is that thin, it should work. Seems like the spring would eventually break at the connection if adjusted very much but I guess once it is set, there would be no stress on that joint. :???:?

It appears to function on the silk thread principal, and is likely a way of setting the timing of the clock. Rather than raising or lowering chops or the bob, it raises and lowers the whole pendulum. Interesting idea.

Yes it is very soft and easy to roll up and unroll

I have never seen it and it looks like a simple idea compared to other SS on French clocks. Maybe it was just not accurate enough as there would be a bit of movement in the spring given its length and thickness with the temperature fluctuations and therefore abandoned?

I made a bottom for it yesterday attached the pendulum the suspension works quite well, winds up all the way tight and all the way down , actually works quite well

I had a clock years ago with a similar suspension. I referred to it as a window shade suspension.. if I remember right, it was signed Henry Marc on the dial.

The problem with this kind of suspension is that the pendulum should not swing straight to the limit of the twist dance. It is certainly a suspension before the two leaf suspension.

How is the pendulum attached, can you show a photo?

Richard
I’d imagine there was a brass block with pin( broken off) like you find on standard French suspension springs, I have a few broken ones that I will re purpose the bottom on to this existing spring
