Hi,
Got kind of a mystery here. There is a 5-tube grandfather clock at my church. It's been there since before anyone remembers. It's in the parlor and has never run. It's not a memorial gift, and there's no record of where it came from. The church wants to fix it. I'm referring them to a grandfather clock repair person in the area.
At first, I thought it might be a Herschede, since they made tubular chime clocks. When I opened the door today, there is a small plate that says: "Vernon Hall Clock, Cincinnati Time Recorder."
I poked around in the Message Board threads and didn't find much on it, but a couple of things stood out: 1) Some thought Cincinnati Time Recorder Co. made the clock (CTR made time clocks, I gather), 2) The Cincinnati Time Recorder gave them as gifts to those who used their products.
In regards to number 1, did they actually build the clock, or did they contract with someone like Herschede to make it for them with their own name on it? In regards to number 2, there was a very prominent business man who was very active in the congregation in the early part of the 20th century. He gave much money to the church, donated a pipe organ, and was involved in the building of the current building. An elegant old home in the town belonged to him. The upshot, he could have used Cincinnati Time Recorder products and got this as a gift.
At our most recent archives committee meeting, we decided that whoever donated this clock probably didn't know what to do with it, and didn't want it themselves, so decided to give it to the church to deal with.
So, can anyone contribute any enlightening information about this clock?
Here's what it looks like. Pardon the odd angles. It's current placement makes it hard to get good views.
Thanks,
Mike
