I just came across this 23j Grade 1623 Vanguard serial number 29634020 and it is marked "6 Positions" instead of "5 Positions". Is this unusual? The online database suggests this serial number should be a 21j Grade 1623.

    Here is a picture.

Not at all. Waltham's railroad grade watches had been adjusted to six positions since the early 1930s. Some time around serial number 32054001 (early 1945) they started being marked "8 Adjustments" in lieu of "6 Positions" but it amounted to the same thing.

Obviously, there's an error. There's no such thing as a "21j Grade 1623." If I had to believe either the watch or the data base, I'd bet on the watch. However, the No. 1623 is the 23-jewel Vanguard. The run is correctly shown in Serial Numbers With Description of Waltham Watch Movements, Waltham Watch Co., Waltham, MA, 1954, (commonly referred to as "The Gray Book").

My Complete Guide to Watches shows only 2 models of 16s Vanguard's marked "6 positions", and both of them have Up/Down indicators.

I looked in my gray book. You're exactly right. It's listed as a 23j Vanguard No. 1623.

LOL. You'd think they would actually edit the darn thing from time to time. When was the last time they made any real changes to it's content??
