American Vanguard 1908 wind indicator motor barrel disassembly.

I recently received a 1919 Waltham Vanguard with wind indicator. It has a broken mainspring. Since this has the wind indicator, it has a gear on the dial side pivot for the motor barrel. The barrel will not separate and I dont want to force it. What is the best way to disassemble this barrel to keep from damaging the winding indicator gear? Do I stake it out?? does it screw out? I am just not sure. (NOTE: this is my first post on these forums. Let me know if I have any etiquette issues )
