US Time Watch or Ingersoll or What is it?

E

Elaine

I bought a Hopalong Cassidy wristwatch. The back case is inscribed with "Good Luck from Hoppy"

The back case also reads: CHROME PLATED BEZEL, STAINLESS STEEL BACK.

No where is this watch marked Timex or US Time and there is no Ingersoll name-anywhere-either on the dial, case or movement. There are no numbers on the inside back case or at the 6 o'clock position on the dial.

It appears to be an early 1960s Timex stainless steel movement.

My question is did Timex or Ingersoll ever make watches that have no area(s) with their name?

Or did someone figure out how to copy the exact inscription size and font of the "good luck from hoppy" on the back and play around with a dial, movement & case?
Thanks for any help!

Hi Elaine,
U.S. Time was absorbed by, or transitioned into, Timex in the late 50's about the time when your Hoppy was made. They are usually classified as a U.S. Time product but they are hard to distinguish from Timex product. The small Hoppys used a stem that is slightly different from other Timex/U.S. mov'ts contemporary to it(anyone who has needed this stem knows what I mean). Timex was the product of many years of corperate aquisition and combination of companies that date back to the 1880's. The production of Hopalong watches was
prodigeous and likely spanned the period of time when U.S. Time transitioned to Timex.I have seen many of these including lots with funky repairs but no fake inscribed ones yet. They are still relatively common and thus aren't yet a target for counterfeiting(to my knowledge).

Hi Cort,

Thank you for your informative reply. I know exactly what you mean regarding the stem on this US Time/Timex.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Elaine,

Cort is correct. It's a Timex. Those watches were made during that transition peroid in the early to mid 1950s. Most of the character watches didn't have the word Timex on them anywhere. That goes for the Cinderella and Snow White ones too. You could even find Mickey Mouse watches with the word "Ingersoll" right on the dial, but they were all Timex. I was told that Timex sold them that way because folks were more familiar with the US Time and Ingersoll names.

I would say that you can usually find a date code on the inside back of those watches, but not always. If you want to do a post on the Timex Forum:

someone could check their catalogs and tell you what years they made the Hoppy's
