A local jeweler seems to be pursuing a novel scrapping strategy, judging from the shop window signs.

It is nearly impossible to explain this strategy. Surely it isn't to buy "Cats" jewelry or watches. They are very scarce, although I do have a Cats in my collection.

However, there is a simple explanation, which I will reveal after a number of you have guessed at what it is.

Presuming they aren't sharing space with an Asian restaurant and aren't harboring an orange, furry alien...

I'd venture they mean catalytic converters?

Or maybe Cat's Eye (The stone)?

I'd go with the catalytic converters for the platinum or palladium. A friend of mine had his stolen out of a Park n Ride lot.

Wow, I just looked at cat scrap prices and have to completely agree with Martin and Dave.

The jeweler isn't buying bonds, catalytic converters, or chrysoberyl (cat- eye stones).

If it's not an acronym for some California welfare program, then I'd have to say they're literally buying felines. Probably as part of a rescue program.

Good guesses, Martin, but not on target. Your post made me look up "CATS" acronyms. I found about one hundred. Here are some examples, several of which have a highly tenuous horological nexus:

    • Californians Against Telephone Solicitation
    • Clockwise Add Counterclockwise Subtract
    • Combat Application of Tourniquet System
    • Collisions in Atom Traps
    • Concerned About Teen Sexuality
    • Cross-Application Time Sheet

Dave, I like your first suggestion, but as with all the others so far, it is wrong.

The correct explanation is that the scrapper isn't in the market for cats at all. The "CATS TOO" sign is not really ion the jeweler's storefront window. Rather, it is in the identical looking storefront window of the doggy wash parlor right next door. Why a doggy wash parlor would want to wash cats is beyond me. Cats don't need baths and the prospect terrifies them. This was my cats' reaction why I suggested taking them to the doggy wash parlor for a shampoo and blow dry.

I think I would incur less dammage sticking my arm under the lawnmower, than if I were to try and give cat a bath.
