Hi all, just purchased and resorted this lovely mahogany bracket clock for an absolute steal, around $300 usd, bargin. Just would like to know if theres any more information about this clock someone could enlight me with. Definitely a later fusee movement design, plaque says "gifted in 1920", suspect it may be older, however zero other markings on the case/movement, nor can I find a similar clock online. Not pictured, but it is an hour strike single gong. Any additional info would be appreciated Many thanks, Jack

I should add that I am in New Zealand, was purchased from someone who told me it was gifted to her grandfather, "Crompton Athletics Club" on the plaque. Must either be gifted in NZ or maybe the UK.

Can you provide a clear picture of the plaque?

Generally, a plaque, such as you describe, could indicate the clock is older than the year of the gift, but usually not by much.

For example, a clock could have been gifted in January, 1920, which strongly implies the clock was made in 1919 or perhaps even 1918, if the clock sat on a retailers' shelf for two years.

"Crompton Athletics Club" on the plaque

Have you googled this organization?

Perhaps some history of the presenter can narrow the date of manufacture.

this lovely mahogany bracket clock

It is a very attractive clock.

Regards.

plaque says "gifted in 1920",

I can't read the plaque in your pictures, but I would be willing to bet it doesn't say 'gifted' - no one in 1920 would have used that horrible modern phrase! I'll put my money on it saying 'Presented to...'!

"Crompton Athletics Club" on the plaque.

There is a town in Lancashire (England) called Crompton which has active football and cricket teams today and may well have had an athletics team in 1920. Does the plaque say why the clock was presented?

It is a very lovely clock with an excellent movement (I am guessing it may be an English-made movement, but not sure) and you certainly got a real bargain for the price you paid.

I am envious!

Enlarging the last picture, the plaque does in fact say "Presented To" in the top line.

"Presented to Percy G.C Heverton by the members of the Crompton Athletics Club, April 1920"

Thanks for the solid replies, cheers, Jack
