Hi,

A friend of mine asked me to look at a clock that has been in his family for many years. At some point, somebody removed the mechanical movement and replaced it with a battery movement. The person also glued a piece of paper over the winding hole. (WOW)!! Does anyone have any advice on how to clean the face, the face is painted on metal.
I told him that I would try to locate an Ansonia mechanical movement to bring it back as close to original as I can. As you can see by the pictures, the distance between the winding arbor and the center arbor is 1 3/8". All of the movements that I have researched have been 1 5/8" or more. Should the measurements be center to center? Also the screw hole that holds the movement in the case are 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. Most of the time only Ansonia movements have 1 screw hole toward the side. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ronnie

Measurements are always center to center. Mounting configuration is 2 on top and 2 on bottom on most of the Ansonias I’ve seen in wooden cases, although now that I think of it, I built a schoolhouse clock movement that mounted on a slant in the case, and it had one about halfway down on one side. I’ve never seen an Ansonia gallery clock before, nor the logo on the dial, but I know they changed a few things in the last few years of production, like making tambour mantel clocks. The case looks to be the right style for that era, so it’s probably authentic. Finding an original movement will be tough. Most of their kitchen amd shelf clock movements were time and strike. The schoolhouse clocks were time only, but the pendulum drop is too long, and the winding arbor is off center to the right instead of directly below the winding arbor. I’ll keep an eye out and let you know if I see anything that looks promising..

This one is for sale on eBay. Looks like it mounts whopperjawed as well, which wouldn’t be a big deal in itself. Has a 10 stamped on the plate, which is usually the pendulum length from the chops to the center of the bob, so might be too long for your case.
