Im wondering if the Bergeon 5896 calipers can be used for pocket watch balances . I have H.R calipers I've been using but I can't get the balance real true in both roundness and flatness . Thanks Chris.

Yeah, I have a set of the 405s and another like them. I rarely use them because they seem more fiddly than the scissors-style calipers, such as the Bergeon 4000. I have several sizes of not-Bergeon scissors-styles that (for me) do the job far more easily.

To get back to the original question, yes, the lyre calipers will work for pocket watch balances if the pivots fit the jewel holes. It is a very nice tool - another one of those annoying instances where the horrifying price really does pay for just the right tool. I use the 5896 for any balance wheel that'll fit.

    Hope this helps.

    Chris,

It takes practice to develop your skills in using calipers. Below is a pic of something that may help. It is made from a razor blade and I blued it for contrast.

Also, you need to rest the caliper on a block so it remains steady. And I do this work with a microscope at 30x. Does not take much to see a hop.

I had a tough time with that type , esp getting the balances round and was able to put this together , the base is from a magnifying glass
