Can somebody confirm that Trifix mainsprings come pre-lubricated. According to Cousins they do. I have always brought my springs from them, but have always cleaned and lubricated before installing. If they come lubricated like Cousins say they do then it will be a bonus. I thought it was an inhibitor on them to prevent rust, but surely Cousins should know ? Shouldn't they ?

They might lube them there, but typically the goop on the spring is just a rust inhibitor, and makes a poor lubricant.

Tri-fix springs from cousins, or from anyone, always need a clean and lube before installing. Not only do I think that what they are covered in is an inhibitor, the annealed ends of the springs are covered in carbon scale. This will only serve to crack and distribute in the spring and inhibit its intended action, i.e. it will inhibit the the coils sliding over each other.

I have been using Trifix springs for the last 7 to 8 years which must amount to thousands by now, this what I currently do

Remove scale from both ends use paper towel to clean off the rust inhibitor, grease then use Hermle barrel centre and my home made spring winder

Thanks for the pics Stephen. Good info. Obviously you find that Horoglide works well. Do you keep topping it up or do you buy a new syringe full each time ? I have never used that before. Or is that not whats in it ?

Hi I have been using M&P mainspring grease for years with no problems, Horoglide is a new product from M&P which comes in its own syringe tube I am very happy with it but what ever you do, do not buy their Graphite grease it is truly awful to apply you will spend a huge amount of time cleaning up after using it.
