Tremont #8399, Melrose #32386.

I'm not sure how sustainable this is. Melrose numbers are above 30,000, but
not sure where Washington St. numbers range.

Since Washington St appears on both full plate and 3/4 plate they will, of necessity, be in two different ranges or possibly more. They may also be whimsical and just scattered throughout. That is why we need to make a list of them.

One nice thing about serial numbers is that a search for just the number will not turn up a huge number of results.

Since much of the history of Tremont/Melrose/English Watch Co is the record of disrupted operations, I would not presume that the serial numbers sequence had any particular meaning except in the larger blocks. i.e. 30,055 is very likely to be early and those over 32,000 are likely to be late but that might be as much as can be known.

It would be worthwhile to try to determine from the examples that appear to be originally cased, the likely time of manufacture of the case. The English Watch Co. examples help a lot because of the English hallmarks.

This is the best I could come up with for the webinar.

Here are the three Melrose that I have. I am pretty sure 30045 was made in the U.S. but am not so certain on the other two. They may have been re-imported in the 1870s time frame by Dennison, Anglo American or EWCo.

Thanks Tom, I offered to work with George to put SN's together.

I picked my Melrose up as movement only in the US and cased it. As you can see, it's a late Melrose.

Tom, I will incorporate the #'s from your Denison orphans writings in list, I will distinguish full plate or 3/4 and wash. st. models as full plate or 3/4 as found. Jewel count also if known and other strange findings in fileand forward to Keith... Cases would be nice but always makes me skeptical of originality . English cases and over 10000 serial # would be great but as you stated there is no way to know what was sold where.

If someone has a "correct" case and a loose movement they are likely to combine them. When I do that I try to record the original information on the case and I keep the movement in my movement collection.

I think if we could get a few hundred examples documented, we might be able to make some sense of it all. If the Washington Street all cluster, we may be able to figure out when from other information.

My friend Bob Howatt may have some information on the Washington Street operation from his research into Bingham. I need to dig out the picture of the Bingham "private label" Tremont that showed up a while back.

I think there must be a story about the dials also.

Besides the marked/unmarked and Jerry's double sunk dial, the 3 Melrose dials above are all different. The one without hands may be a strange restoration of a lost seconds bit, but it is also missing the outer circle on the seconds chapter. The early serial has a curved signature while the other two are straight.

Tom, yes the dials also seem all over the place Tremont Watch Co. straight across also arched also with Boston added and if I remember Jon Hanson said at one time the early models 1500 under ?? were lower jewel count and dials were unmarked. I have not seen this hopefully someone will have an example ....

Here are some pics of Tremont 3219. One cool thing about this watch is the "DUEBER PAT. AP'D FOR" stamp on the movement side of the frame. Not sure about the jewel count.

A very early Melrose Watch Co. example, serial #30003 which I believe is the third Melrose made by serial number ...

iPW12273a08.jpg

Its serial number marking is in a bit different position than other Melrose movements I’ve seen, being tight against the edge of the barrel bridge rather than shifted a small bit to the left.
