Hi everyone,

I came across an interesting carriage clock. I was wondering what a possible year would be of manufacture. I was told that it is ealy 18th century, but I don't think so (It isn't fusee, and has a lever-type escapement which I thought was later than 18th century). It is engraved "Tiffany, Paris" on the outside bottom plate of the clock, with a number under 250. Would that be the serial number? I didn't buy it, I'm just trying to gather information about it.

The clock looks EXACTLY like this one, except the gold gilt is worn off, and the dial is white enamel (not metal as in the picture). http://www.sundialfarm.com/detailpages/French/f55.htm

Any help would be appreciated.

The Tiffany name on it would date it to at least the 1800's. This firm started business in New York in 1837, and was incorporated as Tiffany & Co. in 1868.

I believe it said Tiffany & Co. Paris

I thought it was interesting because the serial number (if that's what it is) is very low--under 250.

Time only, no chime. The clock is about 3 inches high not including the handle. Maybe 2 inches wide but I'm not sure.

The serial numbers on French movements don't give any clues to date a clock. They are always low (considering the number of clocks made), and likely were just used at the factory to keep the case, movement, bezel, and pendulum together through the assembly process. Probably reset each year.

A very nice and elaborate case. It can't be early 18th C as Mudge didn't invent the lever escapement until around 1765. The number 250 will I would think relate to Tiffany who would not have made the clock but retailed it so you could try contacting them about it.
