Help Notice The endless and ineffectual log in request (fixed)

    I am trying to access an article in the Bulletin.

    When I try to access the article on-line I get:

    I keep trying to log out then log in. I can access everything (including requests of donations, of course) but when I try to access the article, I keep getting this.

    Any advice?

    I've gotten the same thing today (maybe in regard to the same request?). I have asked Kevin Osborne whether there is an issue, but have not yet heard back.

    Just heard from Mr. McIntyre.

    Apparently some new software was installed which I guess messed things up.

    Apparently no solution, presently, and IT staff does not work on the weekends. There may be a temporary “work around” to try.

    Well, problem still not fixed.

    I will say all of the ads come through just fine. Thank goodness for that.

    It is not a matter of letting them know, they just cannot figure out how to fix it.

    After complaints by members, mostly here on the Message Board, that it was possible to post a reference to a Bulletin article once its address was known, an elaborate protections system was put in place to prevent that. The employee who set it up is no longer with us and no one currently available knows how it works.

    I had thought when we built it originally that being able to directly access known articles was a good thing but many of our members are concerned about non-members stealing our intellectual property.

    The in-house systems are down at the moment, so perhaps the Bulletin access will be repaired as part of managing that crisis.

    Who complained about it? And what specifically? What is meant by "reference"? We have for a long time been able to post links to Bulletin articles, accessible only to NAWCC members, of course. On the odd occasion, however, we have seen .pdf files of the articles posted, which seemed to be a copyright violation.

    I was referring to the latter. When I first set it up there was nothing to stop one from posting a link to the articles, or to prevent you from downloading an article. Neither of those acts is a copyright violation. It was an issue of secure access. i..e. you cannot read it unless you have paid the fee. My original design protected the inquiry phase. i.e. it would not look it up for you if you had not paid the fee.

    The argument was made that making the lookup open but protecting the contents would show potential users what was available and give them a stronger incentive to pay to view. I believe that argument has some merit, but the more elaborate security also has some hazards as we are seeing now.

    I can get to the Bulletin article but as far as it will let you go. You can't open or read it.

    It is just bad management. No one should be able to do codes that only they know because of this very reason.

    I am concerned that if something happens to Tom, no one will be able to fix things or know how & where everything is?

    Well, I can't even get that far.

    When I try to log onto the main site, I now get this:

    Frankly, this is all very tiresome and this all needs to be fixed.

    I consider one of the main benefits of dues (which I have paid for > 30 years) is access to the Bulletin.

    The system was so annoyed with us that the Firewall committed suicide. They will be installing a new one tomorrow.

    The iMIS system is supported by one consulting company. Joomla CMS and the system software is supported by another. The current theory is that a routine upgrade to the iMIS software caused a problem with the key you are granted when you log in.

    Those systems are hidden behind the wreckage of the firewall so it is not possible to log in at this time.

    I think those Message Board users who habitually use the NAWCC login must be very frustrated at the moment also since they get the somewhat over cute message that RM showed in the previous post. We also have the public login here, so that only keeps them out if they do not know how to use it.

    I reported this Sunday. Fortunately I still had a hard copy of the article I was looking for.

    I received this reply on Monday:

    We are currently having a problem with getting the publications to display.

    We are working to resolve the problem.

    The firewall is back in place and the iMIS server is available for logins. The problem that is causing the failure to retrieve Bulletins persists. We are unlikely to be able to get the necessary consulting service in over the Passover/Good Friday/Easter weekend.

    If I had the skills to fix it, I would.

    One of the two outside experts we hire as needed to work on the system was in today. I have not heard what progress, if any, was made.

    This is the one we have been using all along and it has a problem with resetting and recovering information. The information is all there but the software design scans the Information as it arrives to avoid need to query the database. I believe that is a bad design decision because you do not really need to worry about donation traffic swamping the system,

    The other one uses the design we had on vBulletin and that is why I am investigating it. The problem with it is that it is not as flexible on recognizing Donors and Sponsors.

    The donations have been received and you should have received a thank you from the NAWCC for any donations you made (unless they were anonymous).

    After the 1st of May we should be on a solid product and the donations will all show in the progress and the history. Unfortunately the initial cleanup is manual and I have been really busy with the upcoming National Convention in Springfield.

    Back to Bulletin articles. If access is restored in our lifetimes, is it expected that links currently posted on the MB will continue to lead to the right place. In other words, is there a possibility that all those links will then be dead links?

    Never considered that occurrence.

    That would be bad, especially for those of us who like to research our postings and routinely place links to Bulletin articles to supplement them.

    It would further lessen us as a serious horological research site.

    I suppose it is the worst case scenario, but I raised it simply because when we transferred the Message Board from vBulletin to Xenforo, we lost a number of attachments, many of which have still not yet been restored. However, I may be comparing apples to oranges.

    I had thought this would just by a typographic error in a configuration file, but it is taking much longer than I would have expected. The consultant has had more than a day to work on it.

    I try to avoid saying never, but I do not think there is much chance that existing links will be broken. Of course those links will still be restricted to logged in NAWCC Members so the message will remain the same for those who are not members or not logged in.

    The policy is an interesting marketing question. Is it better to charge for the look up, but leave the contents available. Or, is it better to show the search results but make users pay to see the resulting article.

    I originally set it up with the latter behavior but it was changed to the current (intended) behavior so that potential users could "see what they were missing."

    Here's the latest information I have:


    We have discovered the problem and the fix.


    I just need to spend some time (maybe a lot of time) updating web addresses.


    The current bulletin articles have been fixed but I need to fix all the others.

    I have access to almost 9 years of hard copy Bulletins, and the searchable index can help me locate what I need, but often what I'm searching for goes back decades.

    If Kevin has to go back and update each pdf web address manually, it's probably going to be a very long time before things are restored to where they used to be. Sounds pretty tedious. What happened? :???:
    If web addresses need to be updated, will old links be broken?

    I've just asked if he has an idea of when the fix will be complete. Patiently waiting to hear back.

    What happened? I suspect it's typical of a lot of addresses that we put in our bookmark areas. Someone on the "other" end changed the URL of the location and now your bookmark no long works. Often times people make a slight change to the database/web location of something, possibly thinking that it won't have any effect...but it does.

    I don't really know but that's one possibility.

    I do not believe it is quite that bad. There are techniques to translate the URL's on the fly.

    However, I also broke the database lookup today while trying to figure out what was going on. I was trying to find something I wrote 15 years ago, but I think it had been modified both in content and approach since then. We will need a Joomla expert to bail me out.

    The only person we had familiar with Joomla was Markus and he left. The current hope is that Brian Roy's new design will make all that obsolete anyway.

    Jim, the access to articles where you know the URL seems to be working, but I cannot get the search tool to work correctly from either the Library or Publications page. It appears that the library link just takes on to the Publications page.

    The reason it is not working is that I messed something up while trying to understand the problem. The piece I messed up can be restored on Monday and possibly sooner if I can figure out what I did wrong and repair it.

    If it is working for you can you post the URL that appears in the address bar when you have the good version open for a search?

    I think it is working correctly now. The new tools that are used are quite a bit superior to what I had before, but it took a long time to figure out how it worked after I broke it.

    Please report here if there are further problems with the Bulletin Search (Quick Index).

    I think that it's up and running (from what I can tell).

    I just did a random search for articles on recoil escapements and accessed one of the Bulletin Articles cited in the results.

    That was a lot easier than the previous method as I remember it. I used to search for the reference and manually find it in a manner similar to a Library Catalog and Reference Shelves. Here I just click on a provided link to get the table of contents.

    Now I can focus on a very anemic recoil escapement that someone hosed up with a bunch of solder and uncertainty. :coolsign:

    Thanks to all for getting the bulletins restored. Are there plans to restore the video programs under the Library Resources tab? They appear to have the same 'Please Login" issue. Thanks.

    By the way you might also want to look at the NAWCC channel on Vimeo.com. All of our publicly available videos have been copied there (or soon will be) and the performance is much better.

    Hello Tom,
    I'm looking to view the video 558D MASTERING WOOD-WORK CLOCK REPAIR by George Bruno, but when I download, I get an error when it tries to play. Have others had similar problems with other videos? I'm not finding it on the vimeo service.
