While being here since early October and staying 6 1/2 months, one of the areas we go to is up in the NE where you buy buy JUMBO TIGER PRAWNS that are so big that you will get 4-6 per kilo. These pictures are on a 13 inch dinner plate and ready to cook. Been to many many places through out the world but have never come across shrimp the size of these. Yes they taste incredible too...I

Yes just some of the more simple things in life for sure.. Tons of sunshine and 38C today as its been for the last 5 months. Sure not looking forward to going back to the doom and gloom of NW Ohio for sure..!

Clock Mogul, I don't think you said what island you are on, but I assume it's Sri Lanka. Where are you living and are you just on an extended vacation there? Sri Lanka's an interesting place. My wife and I spent a few weeks there in 2010, in part to attend a wedding. Regrettably, we did not meet any giant prawns.

Yes we are in Sri lanka and have been coming here since 1975 when I was a marine at the american embassy in Colombo. For the last 12 years we been staying here pretty much 6 months out of the year from October to mid April. I love heat and humidity and this is the place for it. This weather suits my passion for cycling as there is no bad weather day here even if it rains. Yes we live here..

Do not think you will see much bigger anywhere in the world. These are mainly exported to Singapore and Dubai for l5 star hotels that must cost them quite a fortune..

We now here on The Emerald island are under a 24 hour a day curfew UFN with zero ALCHOHOL sales ..! Was suppose to return to USA in mid April but all flights in and out of here are cancelled also UFN..! What to do...? no problem...!! Most likely better off here with very little effect health wise...etc etc etc...lucky to have our own humble abode here to ride out the storm..

    How do you purchase groceries?

Have infection rates increased on the island or is this lockdown strictly done with an abundance of caution?

    Regards.

They have allowed special verified vehicles carrying pretty much anything you need to include fruits, vegetables, fish etc etc that come every day. You are allowed to go out to the road with a mask on "MANDATORY" and keep 6 ft separated...

They have been super strict and it is paying off big time as we have 254 confirmed cases and they are all in quarantine. There has been 7 deaths to this point with 26 million people on the Isle. They have every single resource to include military, police and health officials keeping this thing to little as possible as we are a 3rd world country here. I seen we rank 8th in the world in controlling the virus at the moment.

We have been a dry country for the last 45 days with no alcohol sales what so ever but not forbidden from consuming your own if you were lucky enough to buy before of the ban...I also was in Indonesia mid Feb celebrating my birthday with my wife and on our return back to Colombo we were allowed unlimited alcohol purchases from the duty free arriving back in Sri Lanka so I loaded up then and have a well stocked cabinet..:)

Early March just before curfew took effect I entered my first ever sanctioned cycling 40KM Time Trial.. (25 miles) Being the oldest with the next person age wise was 24 years my junior. I placed 7th overall out of about 80 cyclists.. Nothing special but not many my age can even get on a bike ..! :)

Day 36 under curfew/lockdown here on the Emerald Isle and all good on the home front. Had a awesome vendor come by our road last night and had Jumbo Lagoon Prawns forsale fresh caught right here by the beach.. Airport still closed and possibly going to reopen 15th of May for incoming flights. We as of today have 7 deaths and 622 verified cases with most of them already in mandatory quarantine.
Spirits are still high as I been able to sneak out early in the am about 0430 for a 5 mile run each day as this sure keeps the cardio in check for this old coot.. Cheers again from the Indian ocean..

Yes how true but still need to file my 2019 Taxes and luckily they have given a extension and its antique show time for me usually by now but those most likely will be cancelled too..

I did manage to get some of our wood flooring waxed and polished to help kill time. When we had this built last year, we had Indonesian Teak Flooring installed and how gorgeous it is...These are the types of wood you have to use here due to extreme humidity conditions years round...Its 11am Sunday Morning and temp is 102 with a UV index rating of a whopping 11..:)

Well after 237 days gone and a 48 hour flight via DOHA, Chicago and Detroit we are back.... They sure take this virus a lot more serious then here I see.. WOW if I was to be out without a mask on, the police would pull my shirt up over my face..:)

Welcome back (I guess :) ) Yeah, people are a lot more careless here. But I don't think the masks help that much. If the person wearing it is infected, it could help some ... but not so much for the other guy.

I have seen several people wearing face shields recently. Those offer some protection to the uninfected.

Since there are likely three times as many asymptomatic infections as symmptomatic, the masks do serve a useful purpose.

They might do something - but if the disease is spread through coughing, sneezing, and things like that which sends infected projectiles into the surrounding areas, it makes sense for the infected person to have a mask to stop the projectiles and confine them somewhat. But if they are already in the air, they will be sucked in around the mask of the other person. We're not breathing THROUGH the mask. A gas mask might be a better option ;)

If a virus "wants" to survive it needs to be gentle with its host. If it is very good and very adaptive it will meld with the host DNA and only produce enough excess viral particles to propagate its species. Influenza evolve so quickly that they can often take up permanent residence in a human who then becomes a carrier for that mild form. I have been carrying the Swine flu virus, adapted to me, for about 65 years now since the initial outbreak in Korea in 1956. Most people carry the common cold virus and it only causes harm when a variation pops up.

The Covid 19 virus is supposedly more closely related to the common cold than to influenza. It may figure out how we work and decide to get along also but it is a terrible thing at this time.

(I did come down with Swine Flu in Korea the day before I was set to go back to the states. I did a bit of self medication and got my fever down to discharge level the next day so I could pick up my orders and take the slow boat to San Francisco from Yokahama. The rest of this may just be a senile hallucination. :))

Thanks and happy to be back in doom and gloom Ohio when the weather is like this for sure. I have no idea if face masks work or not but if I was to get caught in Sri lanka in public without wearing one several things would and could happen. First thing the police would do is yank my shirt up over my face, scold me and tell me to go home or just simply arrest me. So not ever wanting to spend any time in a Sri lanka jail I just wore the mask..:)

With only 9 deaths and 1200 cases out of 28 million people, they surely must be doing something right I would think....All good here as I was quite surprised how lax things were for us coming off of a international flight from the middle east when landing in Chicago.. I just did not see the urgency like seen in middle east or se asia...

Sure finding it hard to get readjusted to the NW Ohio way of life after 7 1/2 months away from all the doom and gloom news and this one being killed and this one being run over by a drunk driver..WOW... What a way different life style we have in Sri Lanka.. Now if I can dump all the rest of these clocks I have, sure will make it easier for me to hit the road... Change is a good thing but so many play toys to get rid of HAH
