Tall Clock Strike Problem

I keep thinking I'm missing something obvious here but the hour hand (square hole) and the snail don't match up. As the pics show the hand is pointing directly at 9 but the clock will strike 8 at that point. What am I missing? This is a newer hand and has been altered to fit the square cannon.

Hi Barry

You can position the hour hand in one of four positions, so in this case I think you just need to refit the hands to give you the correct position on the snail.

Surely that will only give him 12,3,6,9. I can't see how he gets 8 with that

Buy another replacement hand and file the square properly.

The snail is positioned to strike 8. There is no position on the square shaft for the hour hand that will be correct. Examine how the snail is attached to the shaft. There may be a screw in the side of a collar that can be loosened to allow adjustment, or the snail may be pressed or attached with a rolled seam that is a friction fit. There should be a way to advance the snail disk to "9" without disturbing the position of the hour hand.

I agree with RC. There has to be a way to move the snail. I find they are often just friction fit. The only other possibility I can come up with is that the rack tail has been altered or replaced.
