• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

Hello all, I am an amatuer clock lover and just purchased a tall clock that I am trying to identify. On the face of the clock dial the it has the following printed on it: "H. ganz" and under that it has "Swansea". The Dail is metal and seems to have a "baked on" finish with a contry scene on it. I also know that this dial face is mounted to a plate that is mounted to the works. That plate looks cast and has "Finnemore" written on it.

It is an 8 day weight works.

Any information that can be given would be greatful.

Thanks.

H. Ganz is probably a relative of the above makers.

The dialmakers Finnemore were in business from 1812-52. If you can post any pictures we should be able to get closer datewise.

Here are some pictures of the clock and works. If anyone can help identify it or give me any history about it, that would be great.

LAst one. THis is a picture of an inlay of the oak Door. There is also one in the base portion of the clock.

I am grateful for any help identifying that I can get.

Could the works be by Harlow of Ashbourne? an English works. I am referencing the NAWCC Bulletin from April 2004, there is an article about English Movements. This movement seems to fit the description.

The dial and case put the clock around 1850-60.
It may have meen made up a bit later than that. The initial name does look like an 'X' to me so it may be the Xavier that Frank mantioned. Movements are very hard to place in particular workshops. The Longcase Clock Reference Book by John Robey goes into this subject in great detail so if you are interested I suggest you borrow a copy [it's OP and expensive].

I agree with chasbaz the dial appears to be from the 1850-60 period. This type of movement was very common.

Finnermore made False Plates and Painted Dials 1815-53

The case may not be the type that you would normally find with this type of movement. Some research needs to be done in this area.

Re the Robey book there are remaindered copies on eBay but they will cost you at least $160 plus shipping. The book originally retailed for £95 so this is the new price. So, expensive, but very good if you are interested.
