• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Hello,

I'm repairing a 1979 Nestle Toll House Cookie clock for a friend...it has sentimental value to him. The motor is shot. The motor I took out is a Synchron. It is marked: Synchron 22/6 202-52814, M004, 3 watt, 60 Hz, 120 VAC. The back side has a 10 leaf pinion with the numbers 2376, 52851, and 29552.

Is this the same motor as the A-43RA that is shown in the Merritts and Timesavers catalogs? Looks the same, but I was a little concerned about not being able to match up the number strings.

Thanks!

Bill

Bill:

I have one of those Nestle clocks as well. My mother gave it to me when they first came out. They came with a cook book with recipes that matched the the colors shown on the dial wheel.

I don't know anything about the motors, but I have seen these clocks come up on eBay relatively often. They typically have sold for $30.00 or less. You may will find a clock on eBay from which to claim the motor, if you have to time to find one.

I'm pretty sure that the motor comes in both CW and CCW motions, although the book does not mention that. Maybe a phone call would be in order. Then, if the RPM is correct and it will mount into your clock, you should be in business.

Scottie,

The motor runs with a bumping noise and keeps time unevenly. It can probably be fixed somehow, but I doubt it is worth the effort if the A-43RA is the proper replacement motor. I'll check with Hansen and see what they say...or just take the chance and order an A-43RA. We'll see!!

Thanks!

Well, for those of you out there that might have read this thread...don't try an A43-RA...it is not the right motor! Wrong mounting holes and pinion has ten leaves but is way too big. So much for trusting to luck.

Hansen has not responded to my emails and I have not yet been able to discover life on the other end of the phone.

Anyone out there have any other thoughts on this motor?

Thanks!

Bill

Bill, I am going to move this thread down to the electric clock forum for better exposure, and give you another possible source for your motor.
Try American Time and Signal,
1-800-328-8996. They have a lot of different syncron motors, used in school clocks and time recorders. There is always a chance they can match to yours.

I have also had good service in the past by calling Hansen and speaking with them about the particular motor I needed. They were very helpful to me, asking me to read them the data on the motor and then telling me all about the motor and the proper replacement. It is rather remarkable that they still manufacture many if not all of these old motors.

I'll take the unusual step of replying to my own question to share what I found out about these clocks. They were produced by Mechtronics, of Stamford, CT in about 1979. At that time, Mechtronics apparently purchased motors and movements to put into these clocks from Mallory who had recently purchased Synchron. Mallory does not currently own Synchron, and although both companies exist, they are now independent.

This bred an unusual situation...Mallory made a motor for this clock, which was marked Synchron and numbered as the model M004...today referred to by Hansen (who currently owns Synchron) as the "Moo Four". Although Hansen makes a lot of direct replacements for the motors in older clocks, they do not make a direct replacement for the Moo Four. This motor was a Mallory creation. Hansen tells me that Mallory does not deal in small orders, and does not supply replacements for the Moo Four.

I was lucky enough to get mine running again with a good cleaning and oiling of both the motor and movement. However, if the Moo Four motor is not repairable, the approach recommended by Hansen is to order an A129RB-6 from R&M Importers (Hansen's distributor)...the R&M part number is 811030. You then partially remove one of the two tabs that interferes with mounting, and supposedly super glue this side of the motor down. Since it is not a high torque motor, this should work.

I'm not sure I wouldn't keep trying to find a New Old Stock Moo Four motor...but this is what Hansen recommended. Luckily, I didn't have to push it this far.

I hope this helps someone else who might be contemplating fixing one of these clocks in the future...they aren't valuable, but for some folks they are sentimental.

Best regards!

Bill

Hey Bill,

Do you happen to know if R&M Importers (Hansen's distributor) has a website and, if they do, what their web address is?

Thanks,
Rick
