Western Union required that if they sold an old Self Winding Clock, for instance if the Time Service was being discontinued, and the removal of the clock would have left a unpainted mark on the wall, the W. U. Technician was required to remove the synchronizer parts and magnets. This is one of a number of reasons that these clocks are often found missing the sync. parts.

SIMILAR PROBLEMS THROUGHOUT THE RECORDER INDUSTRY. MANY OFFICE REGULATORS THAT DOUBLED AS WATCHMAN CLOCKS OR TIME RECORDERS WERE STRIPPED OF THEIR AUXILLARY DEVICES. ALSO WHEN COMPANIES WOULD INSTALL THE NEWER TECHNOLOGIES THEY WOULD DESTROY THEIR COMPETITORS OBSOLETE EQUIPMENT.
