Surprise Mail Delivery

Actually not that much of a surprise. This showed up in my mail box today. It was my great grandfather's and my brother sent it to me to have a look at it.

It needs a new crystal and a good servicing. It was sitting in a drawer for probably 50 years, but it wound up and ran (albeit fast).

I got started because my grandfather, who worked on the Pennsy, had a 992. That went to one of his sons who has passed an now it's whereabouts are unknown. First watch I bought was a 992 since I did not get PopPop's. That lead me to discover that I had no will power to resist buying more!

Yes, that is what happened to us. My wife bought a 100 year old Elgin for me this Christmas and it quickly turned into a hobby. Between the two of us we now have 12 pocket watches watches at least a century old. This morning she said that 12 was a bad number and we need another. Ha!

You are right, now that I look at it.

I would think it is original, but, It looks like the stem is bent slightly. I guess my great grandfather used his watch, given the scratches on the crystal and the slight wear on the back. It's nothing major, but I am thinking this was a carry watch for him.

I look at it this way, a hundred years ago almost everyone either wore or carried. No permit was required for either. These were tools of the day.
