I just purchased a pedometer made by A. Lietz & Co. Does anyone know of someone who could repair this item?

Hi Frank, and welcome to the forum,

Does it run and have you removed the back to look at the movement? There are 1,760 yards in a mile, so is this a pedometer rather than a stopwatch?

Regards,

Graham

I just purchased a stopwatch made by A. Lietz & Co. The numbers progress in increments of 180 and tops out at 1760. What is this thing?

Yes. We now think this is a pedometer of some sort rather than a stopwatch. A. Lietz & Co. was a drafting and surveying equipment company so it would make sense as a surveyor's tool. It doesn't work currently.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for identifying this item. Do you know of anyone who could repair it?

The only person in the US I can think of who might be able to help you is Doug Shuman, who's a member here, ('dshumans'). He specialises in complicated watches, so it's worth contacting him via a private conversation; if you hover or click on his forum name above you'll see a button marked 'Start Conversation'.

These are actually incredibly simple. Have you taken off the back and looked inside? The problem might be obvious if it's not working.

There will be a crescent shaped weight that moves up and down as you walk. It interacts with an index wheel that the weight moves. There would be a gear or two and probably an adjustment feature to allow the user to set his/her stride length. That's about it.

So I understand the large dial representing a mile (1760 yards/mile) but can anyone tell what the smaller dial represents? Some other representation for “distance measured”? Asking for a naive friend, aka me.

P.S. I have a “few” pedometers, but not like this. If there is any interest, I could probably post a pic or two of the insides?

It is most likely an accumulator, counting every time the large hand make a round, good for 50 miles.

Does it reset when the crown is pressed down?
