Can anyone tell me the meaning of the arrow mark next to the serial number?

Thanks,

It is a service screw James to keep the movement in winding mode when the movement is out of the case, this way no load/drag from the setting mechanism on the train when timing/adjusting.

How do you accomplish this without this feature? Remove the canon pinion?
There is usually one or another solution to set the movement in winding mode when out of the case. This feature is found mainly on American watches with crown and stem that is attached to the case. On European movements the stem is attached to the movement and snaps into two positions, so the watch can be operated also when the case is removed.
