Hope everyone in the northeast is warm and safe from this wintry blast. I am hunkered down watching it blow past the windows at 45 mph. It would be a good day at the watch bench but woke up a few weeks ago with limited feeling in my right hand and right side of the mouth. they seem to have ruled out a stroke, have an appointment with an orthopedist as I have a bad right shoulder and am thinking that it has snagged a nerve. If you don't have to, don't go out. My wife wanted to know it I was going to get coffee and a paper, gee hon, look out the window, maybe you can go instead.

Great to hear that stroke was ruled out. Orthopedic issues can be dealt with much more easily.

I do not live terribly far from Ocean County, NJ, so we are experiencing the same issues. The temperature here is cold enough that the snow is light and fluffy, not too difficult to shovel. I suspect that the nearer to the ocean, the warmer the temps, which would make your snow heavy and wet. Hopefully, you have some industrious neighborhood kids who want to earn a few bucks and shovel for you.

I can hear our Canadian friends snickering, as this type of weather is an every day occurrence to them.:)

Take care and make sure you update us on your medical issue!

    Regards.

    Hi Richie,

I hope you can get your feeling back so you can enjoy your hobby.

We are indeed having a brutal winter so far, and about to get a couple more blasts of cold tomorrow.

We live on the St, Lawrence Seaway and usually around the middle to end of December the seaway closes and we can hear the ocean going ships passing by to clear the seaway before it closes. The closing dates have been getting longer and longer over the years and this year they said to get out by Dec 31. The latest closing I can remember. We went for a drive after New Years and noticed some ships anchored in our local anchorage. Strange...suppose to close by now. Well one ship had been anchored for a while and some ice had built up on its hull. The lock is 80 feet wide, she is 78 foot wide, as she entered the lock she got stuck due to the extra ice build up. That was a few days ago, and two tugs pulled all day and no go. It is still stuck and 4 more ships are held up till they get it all going again.

    Happy New Year.

    David

Looks like this thread needs a report on the weather from the South. It's been in the teens temp wise here for about a week now, and we had about 3" of snow last night. First time this winter, and most likely the last. Very rare! It's now nearly 10 am, and so far there has not been one car drive down my street. Being originally from Illinois I think it's funny, but here, people are petrified to get in their car and drive. Good thing probably, as most of them that try drive so slow they impede traffic. Schools closed, businesses, church cancelled last night, etc.

And another report from the South: Central Texas this time. Nothing compared to those of you in the north, for which I am most thankful! After several days in the teens and upper 20s, we made it to around 50 yesterday. We had ice and a little snow on New Year's Eve, which certainly dampened the fireworks and other celebrations. Following the measurable snowfall in early December, this is certainly a record year here. And that is without mentioning the drought, floods, etc. that were 2017.

    Stay safe and warm!

We have a lot of snow too, I've been out a few times shoveling our driveway
plus to clear the front of my driveway where the town plow
dumps the snow(they do it to everyone else's too).

Very sorry to hear about your, " limited feeling in my right hand and right side of the mouth"
and I'm glad too that it isn't a stroke!!
Hope it gets sorted out soon.

Thanks, Rob. Waiting for our son to come over to help shovel. He doesn't want me to ruin what is left of my right arm, the bicep muscle tore as did the rotator cuff and subscapulus muscle. Have an appointment with the orthopedist Monday to try to get to the bottom of this. It is peculiar, the numbness arose after a good nights sleep and the rotator cuff tore during the night as well, who knows. I am waiting for the winds to subside and snow to lighten up before I even think about going outside.

Just paid the development backhoe guy 20 to clear the end of the driveway, almost 5 feet of snow gone in 2 minutes.

$20 well-spent. Glad to hear you are taking care of your arm/shoulder. Hopefully you'll be able to get in with the doctor soon after the weather abates and get it all fixed. Take care!

thanks for asking, seeing a Doc to check nerves next Friday, then see the orthopedist to tell me the results the following week, then decision time on surgery and how much is needed. Really can't afford to take 6 weeks off, will likely be replaced by that time.

Stay warm and safe folks. Remember, shovelling snow creates the ideal conditions for cardiac issues, take it easy. My dad always said, 'if somethings worth doing, it's worth paying someone to do it for you'

Doing OK, Rob, made it through the snow today, only about an inch by us here in Brick, NJ but lots more in north NJ and NY. No joy on nerve issues, neurologist said head MRI showed nothing "remarkable", well I not exactly a member of Mensa and a bulging disc in the neck with a hole in the sheathing on the spinal cord but said it was nothing to worry about. I often wonder what the doctors actually know, I have seen 2 orthopedics and a neurologist along with the GP and no one can tell me anything. Maybe they need a message board like this.

Sorry to hear about your Dr situation, I kind of feel the same way about
    them most of the time.
