I recently acquired this small manual grinding wheel assembly, figuring it might come in handy for small grinding jobs in a vise.
It was sold as a Lorch watchmaker grinding wheel, and the post does fit the Lorch-type tool rest for their watchmaker lathes.
Any particular use this manual grinding wheel may have been designed for on a lathe?

The tool was intended to re-grind conical pivots of alarm clocks etc.
Not very useful, as these staffs often were surface hardened only.

Another important use would be to re-grind lathe centres in situ on the lathe. This is actually, why I bought mine.

Remember to protect the lathe from any grinding dust ;)

Thanks Frank and Wefalck, for pointing out to me two possible uses of this tool. And for the warning about grinding dust (which I assume can do harm to finely matched surfaces).
    Regards.

Some people say that the manufacturers encouraged grinding on their lathes (there were quite a few attachments for grinding available) in order to increase their sales ... :D
