If I read correctly...silver is near $28 an ounce...would that make a 3 ounce case as pure scrap be worth $84?

If so, would not silver cases be worth premiums?

Coin silver cases made in the USA are .900 fine. That would make the scrap value of a 3 ounce case near $75 , less smelter's fees.

As an antique dealer put it today, silver has become the new buyers gold as they cannot afford gold, they buy silver. I just hope the silver cases stay exempt from the vast majority of smelters as we have lost enough gold cases. I agree on her assessment of the gold market, people are scrapping jewelery at an alarming rate from what I see in the shops. Even gold filled has a value, are these cases going to go the way of the buffalo as well? I wish I had the money to save them all, but I don't.

I've been buying a fair number of silver watches over the past year. Even a year ago, when it was at $16/ounce, I paid a premium for silver cases.

Some of my less expensive buys-which, at the time, were bought for melt value, have gone up considerably.

Even so, I buy the silver cases because I really like them-I like how they look and how they feel in the hand. They're the correct sort of case for a lot of the watches I enjoy collecting.
