Here is a Swiss made Standard watch made for the North American RR market, a 19 jewel Zenith Prima 16 size movement that would have been accepted by any North American railroad that allowed Swiss (or German) watches that met the railroad's time service requirements. Zernith also made 21 jewel (Superior grade) and 23 jewel (Extra grade) versions. These were made in both 16 and 18 size examples.
These were very well made and expensive movements and not many were made.

Nice specimen.

It's interesting that the Canadian Pacific Railroad allowed use of the 18s Prima whether with 17j or 19j however the 16s Prima was bypassed. The only 16s Zeniths accepted by the CPR were the Extra in 23j & the Superior with 21j/23j. In due course the 16s 21j Extra RR-56 was allowed (recall that that movement was created at the behest of a CPR head office watch inspector).

Go figure ...

I'm trying to figure out where to rate the condition of this watch though the levels are a bit subjective not sure if it would classify as fine condition, very fine condition etc. Any guesses? I tend to underrate them. Thanks

This is a little off topic for this particular thread, but you would need to show much better
photos. Ones without the Glass lens and up close and clear without too much
reflection. For both the dial and the movement. :)

BWR 19j 16s 455, A5p, # 20777391 (1918).

I came across the 17j Elgin 455 BWR 19J, A5p last July and entered the second bid on the watch. Surprisingly there were no other following bids, and I wound up paying only $86 for it, which made for a pleasant surprise.

Paul, I envy your photography skills! :thumb:
Thanks for the compliment, but in reality I'm no Ansel Adams.

I use an inexpensive L.E.D. light box which you can control the brightness inside for better results, and install my own matt black background which makes it easier to contrast . I use a Canon EOS digital SLR I bought about 13 years ago with a 50mm lens. Then I take dozens of pictures at the largest file setting adjusting settings in between shots. Out of the many pictures taken I use the ones I think best and delete the rest.

For some odd reason I have gravitated toward collecting 19j watches.
Maybe other people can share some of theirs as well.

I will start with a 16-size, 19-jewel Illinois, model 11, open-face, Bunn grade movement, built in about 1919.
My understanding is that there were 15,900 of this version made between about 1917 and 1925.
(but I have also seen figures of 14300). It's in it's original case, with very nice clean plumb colored hands(the color can't be seen in photo).
The dial does have some damage, but I'm not going to change the original dial(it doesn't bother me it has
history). It does have one of my favorite features on a 19j watch, the exposed gold jeweled motor barrel, and gold gear train.

Illinois, 16s, Model 9, 19j, "Sangamo Special", s/n 2575029, ca 1913

3 Finger True Center Bridge; Broad Transverse Damaskeened Band Pattern on Nickel; Yellow Gold Engraving on Movement; Diamond Endstone, Ruby & Sapphire jewels in raised gold settings, oval top & bottom pallet jewels, sapphire jeweled barrel, gold balance screws, rounded & polished gold train wheels, gold guard pin, Patent Regulator

llinois database shows total production of 1100 19j Sangamo Specials from 1913-1915. This watch is a relatively uncommon variant with the Diamond End Stone. Although an exact number is unknown, some references suggest that at a maximum, only 500 Sangamo Specials were ever made with a Diamond End Stone.

Apologies for the quality of the pictures, it is pretty dull here in the UK right now so very little by way of natural light. Add to that I have just discovered that my editing software doesn't work with Windows 11!

Anyway, just 99 more to find now. Bunn Mdl 8, Hunter. I feel sure that when I first acquired this, around 15 yrs ago, I posted on the Forum and Kent came back saying that the dial numerals were of a design produced exclusively for the Burlington Watch Co. The movement isn't in the best of condition and I seem to remember that one of the barrel jewels is cracked. However, it rans pretty well and kept reasonable time. It must be 10 years since I last serviced it and it hasn't been wound since then. There are hairlines in the dial too.

Said in a nice way :) .

Remember this thread is only for 19j Standard watches.
These are watches that are 19j and would have qulified
for Railroad service when they were made. Only 16s and 18s
sizes would fit in this catagory.

Thanks
Rob

Hi DaveyG:

Here's your original post for your neat watch, with my comments immediately following.

I'm more convinced now, nearly twelve years later, that the movement dial and case are an original combination.

OK so this is the fifth or sixth Hamilton 952 posted in this thread.
This one is noteworthy for two reasons:
- Private label - dial reads "Morrow & Co Precision", movement signed "Thomas Morrow, Holyoke, Mass." I have read this is quite rare on a 952.
- Per Halligan notes, the serial number (752002) is one higher than the first pendant set 952.

^^^^^^^^
and the serial lends credance to what has been posted about many of runs where the first ten serials in the run were saved ''in the grey" to use for private label or special finish movements.

Here’s my 18 size 19 jewel Waltham Vanguard Model 1892 with an Ohlson regulator. Just got it back from overhaul. It went in for service at the end of December. Still not unreasonable as I got three other watches back before it. That and my watchmaker does such a volume of business with walk in traffic that some days he can’t get anything done on the bench.
