Hi, recently picked up this ships clock at an estate sale, guy said it was a Shatz ? Has mide in Germany on the bottom of the dial ., and Made in Western Germany on the back. Is there a significance to the specific reference to West Germany because it was made pre-reunification ?, or is that just the way they do things.

It chimes regularly for ships watch hours, but I have also notice a soft single chime at the 45 minute mark, is it supposed to do that ?

any info as to maker, model, age would be appreciated ship1.jpg ship2.jpg

Made in West Germany indicates it was made 1949 to 1990.

Made in Germany indicates it was made 1891 to the present day (which, of course, includes the period 1949 to 1990).

There was no requirement, under either U.S. or German law, to use the term West Germany (or variants) as opposed to Germany during the period 1949 to 1990.

Regards.

Hi,

Yes, I think the seller was right - the clock looks very much like a product of the German firm Schatz. It isn’t very old, and dates to the latter part of the date bracket given above - roughly 1980’s, perhaps a shade earlier.

Regards.

I agree, it looks like a Schatz. At the 45 minute mark there should be no strike so something is out of adjustment.

I would agree with Tick. 1980 - 86 would be my guess. Buyer beware, the movement is probably not good and also not easy to repair. Willie X
