Sherline Lathe or Accessory Part Identification

This item appears to be a Sherline item based upon the red coloring. It is 3 inches long and 3/4 inches in diameter, The hole shown goes through the complete item. It was found in a box shipped to me from an auction house where they had a Sherline 4400 lathe in the sale.

I don't know what it is, but -depending on its size- it could be used as a let-down tool. One could insert a clock key with the wings in the slot and use the body of the tool as the handle.

I have made something similar for myself from a piece of wooden broomstick.

i would think if it were a shoreline piece it would be black.... does look like a let down key thingamajig

Let down key hold is possible. I tried it with various keys and found on double ended key with the smaller diameter end the device does not grab the ears sufficiently enough and it might slip. Also, do not understand why they would bore it completely through. My next stop will be to try Sherline and see if they recognize it.

That's how I made my first let down tool. I just used a wood dowel instead.

While blue dykem is the most common color, there's also red, and that's what I thought when I saw this. I don't think the color means it has anything to do with sherline, it just means it's homemade. Someone may have scored a center line with a height gauge before cutting the slot.
