Bad news when you see this!

This is what an 18# weight can do on a modern clock after a 35 year run.

The front winding arbor holes are worn much more than the back ones but the stop-works cogs are in the way for a photo at this time. All 6 are bad.

On a brighter note, the rest of the trains look pretty good. Willie X

It looks like the bushing has been Orbiting the plate, I wounder how long it took for one rotation?

Willie, weren’t those movements made late ‘80s early ‘90s? I remember selling clocks with them. They were supposed to run 14 days before needing to be wound. The wear situation was catastrophic and Urgos quickly discontinued them. Peter

A southern technical term fits, that I learned while working in Florida.
"Wallered out"


wallered; verb

Term used in maintenance fields to discuss wear that causes a circular fitting to lose dimensionality, often related to vibration or off-center repetitive motion.

The mount for that bolt has been wallered out and will need to be replaced.

You may be thinking of the infamous
UW-66. It had light weights and thin plates. I think it was there last new model? It did indeed have some wear problems. I have a photo here somewhere. This one did loose mesh with the 2nd wheel pinion!

When Urgos tried adapting their chainwind UW32 movement to cable drive, the results were disastrous. I think the cable driven UW32 came out during the 1980's when Urgos was facing the end and their remaining clients wanted to get fancy. One of those things that looked like a neat idea on paper and didn't hold up in practice.

Jauch KG tried a similar movement during the late 1970's and surviving examples are scarce. Herschede was a known user of these movements.

Here is the worst "wallowed out" place (C1F) before and after. Those file marks were left from filing away the 'banana peeled' edges of the old hole! Willie X

Just old brass. I probably would have used bronze but didn't have that size.

If this were my personal movement - (time and money not a consideration) - I would have called Mark to fit up some Butterbearings.
This would be a great application. So far all the ones I've installed are sill running great.

It's an outstanding movement but not for the reasons one would hope for.
