I have a Seth Thomas works that is stamped with a ST inside of a diamond with a circle around it and the #890. It is in a black Mantle Adamatine case.
Can anyone tell me if this is a part # or is it any indication of age?
Just getting into doing the cleaning and repairs on my own clocks and would like to know more about determining the age.

Thanks Buz

Movement #. Seth Thomas clocks can sometimes be approximately dated or dated by movement #.
Another tool used in identifying them is the location made , Thomaston,
' Plymouth Hollow , etc.
The Tran Duy Ly Seth Thomas Guide , "Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements" would be good for you to have.

This number is the movement type. The 89 movement was the most common movement used in the Adamantine cases, yours if you look closer is probably an 89C, or D.

I suspect the number you are referring to (#890) is actually movement # 89D.

If so, Ly's publication indicates it was in catalogs from 1901 thru 1936.

After taking another look at the movement it is clearly marked 89 C.
Would this date it to the early 1900's?

Thanks

Buz,

If your ST case is a black Adamantine it may be dated on the bottom. The numbers of the year would be reversed, the year 1896 would be 6981.
