Hi,
I have just bought another project clock as we are still ‘locked down’ in the UK and repairing clocks is a pleasant way to pass the time. The clock is an eight day Seth Thomas spring mantel clock with clock papers intact ( so that I know it’s not German) and has a fairly ornate case front - lots of gold paint. The glass panel on the lower part of the door looks original - there is no sign of it having been removed- and shows a family group picking ‘grapes?’ Is this a known feature on ST clocks and is the picture showing grape picking in USA? I would love to know as it seems a bit mysterious to me! Thanks for your help, everyone.

Hi,

I'm fairly confident the image on the lower glass is a replacement, although I may be wrong - it seems to me someone cut out a coloured print and put it in the place of what would have been reverse painting, at least that is what you'd expect to see on these clocks. What points me towards a replacement is that the picture isn't perfectly aligned - you can't fully see the top of the image, it looks slightly "snipped", whereas the bottom half is higher up and you can see the white border. Perhaps it is just a reflection. It would help to see how the glass is mounted (the back of the door) to form a more definite opinion.

Regards.

Thanks for the reply. I wondered about that possibility myself but I checked and enclose a photo of the rear of the door. The picture does show it very well but it is perfectly smooth - no sign of anything being stuck on. As far as I can see, the picture belongs to that piece of glass. Still a bit of a mystery!

I can't comment on the grape theme, but I've seen several different pictures in these clocks, without closer examination looks authentic to me.
