The problem I see is not the high-end/high-grade watches that are 18k and 14k
and platinum etc.(with high demand). (including rare/uncommon watches, Military ones or ones with provenance).
It's the more populus ones in Gold Filled and Nickle and Coin cases I question.
Many of these fall into the $150-$250(maybe up to 350) price range. These don't seem to sell individually at the
auction houses, but in larger "lots' of watches.
If you own 100 of these watches (that you love and collect)
the Auction Houses are NOT as good for these (in my opinion).
Solid Gold sells fast.

Sometimes I look at the auctions to buy a watch that I want. I see it
in an original case that is Gold Filled for $300 on Ebay or for $700-1000 in a solid gold
case on the Auction site. I have made my own personal choice to collect the
watches and not the Gold. Selling them may be harder.

Yes, for a little over the scrap value in case of movements, which are nice, but not extraordinary and bear no name well known to the public.

At least in Europe it needs gold + famous name for really good sales (I do not regard a sale for scrap value as good)

That is indeed a major point of joining the NAWCC and getting to know the other players directly. And they don't need to be in driving distance. I've made most of my purchases from other collectors via email, telephone calls, and the registered mail. One of those friends I've never even had the pleasure of meeting in person.

Hm, perhaps I missed something. Assumng you had nice watch for sale und assuming that it would be of interest for me, how would we get to know that of each others? I thought that any hint as to that a poster has something for sale is not allowed, not even by external link? The market place here, at the bottom, is virtually dead, resp. is "want to buy" only

The idea is to develop personal relationships with other collectors with interests overlapping your own, so you get to know one another's collections and one another's goals. You share information and advice, and over time, buying and selling opportunities will just naturally pop up between you.

That rule was modified quite a while back. If you want to discuss value and do not want to offend the traditionalists on the Forums just prefix your thread with a $ from the prefix dropdown.

The NAWCC is trying to understand how to get more income from our online presence and it is possible that we could add commercial content to the site. One of the issues is that our Mart Magazine is a sales venue and we are concerned about undercutting its income stream.

There are no restrictions about commercial transactions in the Conversation facility and you may even have a number of participants in such an activity. If anything is sold, the physical and financial aspects are handled privately. If you are unhappy with the result, that is not something the Forum would be involved with.

I think you answered the wrong question Tom.
I do not think he asked about value, but buying and selling, and that is not
allowed on the open forum(that has not changed).

The NAWCC for decades tried to contain the economics of watch collecting and the actual market in watches to itself. If you didn't pay your dues you didn't have access to either sort of Mart.

The internet came along, and the NAWCC thought it could beat free information. It didn't, and the free information killed the NAWCC as a buying and selling forum for practical purposes. It still has its museum and dinosaur membership, but like most similar clubs it will fade out like the Shakers.

Yes. I've already been the recipient of the shared love, simply by being here. My gratitude to those whom have helped me.

If it wasn't for the internet, I would most likely have never found the NAWCC.

I'm not sure what your statement has to do with Tim trying to sell his collection?

I can only speak for this particular forum. We (the members here) like it here, and do enjoy
sharing information with each other and admiring each other's Pocket Watches.
This is not a Mart or the NAWCC Administration but just a Forum that anyone can join. They do not
need to be a member of the NAWCC to participate here(post on the forum).

All further responses will be removed unless they are
on Tim's topic

I want to be nice here but saying "what a load of crap" is about as nice as I can get in response to this.

I am a long time pocket and wristwatch collector. I have been doing eBay since it started. I am very web savy and follow all of the online auctions. That said, about 85% of what I buy, and I have been very quantitative about this, comes from NAWCC marts or NAWCC members I have met along the way. About 5% or less comes from any auction source including eBay. Most of what I collect and keep is very high end. The NAWCC is still the best source for watches if a collector is willing to work it.

Also you are implying that the NAWCC is dead when we have already come close to selling out all of the mart tables for our national convention in July. Both Breitling and JP Morgan are among the main sponsors (paying sponsors) of this event. In January alone we got about 50 brand new wristwatch collector member from the NYC area because we gave a talk to their organization and they want to be able to come to our national.

I could go on and on about the new things we are doing at the NAWCC. I will also say that we will continue to improve.

The NAWCC is far from dead. If you think we are dead you are not paying attention.

Rob, I meant for the pointer to the Conversation Facility to answer the direct question. I have not sold anything via the Conversation facility, but I have purchased several items that were offered to a group of possiby interested parties. I am pretty sure I am not the only one who has done that.
