My name is Philip and I live in Midland, Texas. I am 23 years old and have been repairing clocks for a few years. I am falling in love with this craft and am beginning to imagine myself doing this craft as my life’s career. I consider myself very proficient with basic clock repair…I have read books by Steven Conover, enrolled in John Tope’s online school, joined the NAWCC, and worked with a gentlemen from the east coast for a week.

I am at a point in my career I find that I need some personal attention to aid in my growth as a clock repair specialist. I am trying to locate someone within a reasonable distance of my hometown to allow me to come for an apprentice type situation for a week or so, with roundtable question and answer and mentorship. Is this something that any of you would be willing to assist me with? I can compensate you for your time as well as find my own lodging and meals. My phone number is 432-770-5177. Please call me if you are interested.

Thank you.

Hi Philip,
In the NAWCC workshop series there use to be a workshop called "Camp" and as I recall reading, you let the instructor know what you would like to work on. This could be something to consider if it is still being offered. I think that you have presented your situation and yourself very well and I'm sure that you will have success. Good luck.

Have you joined your local chapter of the NAWCC? That might be a good way to get involved and perhaps find someone to help you to the next level.

Edit: Here's where you can find your local chapter.

We worked together for 5 days. He gave me an introduction to the lathe which was much needed. I learned how to make bushings and polish pivots. We also focused on proper re-bushing techniques. I had been using a Bergeron machine and was able to use his Elma KWM which I like much more. He was kind enough to sell me an extra Elma machine he had. We also covered invaluable tips and tricks.

Cool! Sounds like you benefited a lot from the experience! For more lathe experience, check out the suitcase workshops that Jerry Kieffer teaches.

I live about 3 miles from him. I wonder what he could teach me about cuckoos? What did he charge for your training?

I would rather not post our negotiated rate online. However I will say it was a very fair price for his expertise. He has a lot of experience with cuckoo clocks so I think you would benefit from reaching out to him.

I wanted to give a quick update for y’all it’s been about 2 months since I left Michael’s place in Phoenix and have had my most successful months yet. I recommend apprenticing for anyone who is looking to step their game up.
