Hi,
Does anyone know who William Dallaway, or Dallaway and Son produced dials for 1790 to1820

Thanks,
Chris Blake

Chris,
Edinburgh along with Glasgow were the main dial making centres in Scotland and I would imagine most Scottish clockmakers used the one nearest to them, all other things being equal. The only info I can find on Dalloway is below which strongly suggest William started out on his own and then the son joined the business.
DALLAWAY, WILLIAM - EDINBURGH - clock dials 1775 to 1793 & later
DALLAWAY & SON - EDINBURGH - clock dials c1797 to 1812 & later?

Hope this helps.

Jonathan,
Thanks for looking! Great information! I know the time period must have been 1775-1793 as the stamp does not read "And Son". Still hoping to one day find out who the maker of the movement was. Still have not started work on the dial that has been repainted with a very shaky hand. Hopefully the dial will reveal some clues.
Thanks much,
Chris Blake

Hi Chris,
I read that Dalloways used an unusual type of minute notation - 10-20-30 instead of 5-10-15-30, and are quite distinctive in other ways. Does this dial have a falseplate? Presumably you have checked for stamping or engraving EVERYWHERE on the movement - you might get lucky.
Best,

Chris,
What type of dial is it, square or arched? I ask with regard to Chas's interesting point as while I have seen 15-30-45-60 minute notation I haven't seen the 10 minute type. I believe minute notation of this type was popular ca 1800-30 along with Arabic numerals. Any chance of a picture?

chasbaz,
I have no idea what was originally on the dial. The dial was repainted at some point. I can see the paint layers along the chipped edges. I have tried looking under ultraviolet light and can see no bleed through of the original, so I don't know about the minute count. Anyway it is an arched dial with a false dial that is stamped Dallaway Edin. The dial and false dial appear to be original to the movement which has no markings of any kind.
Regards,
Chris Blake

Hello Chris,
If you are planning to remove the overpainting it would probably pay you to buy or borrow a really good book - Longcase Painted Dials, their history and restoration, by M.F.Tennant, NAG Press. I mainly use it for history, but there is a large section on restoring, since the writer is an expert restorer.

Hi Johnathan,
I have a Scottish long case clock with a dial that has the 10-20-30-40-60. Here it is

Joe,
Nice clock. Who is the clock maker or dial maker of your clock?

You have only given us a thumbnail, but it does look about ca 1800.

Regarding names on movements, it is very unusual to ever find such a thing on a longcase.

PS: You seem to have got a few extra tags! You only need the IMG and /IMG ones.

Nice clock Joe and thanks for posting, I can now say I have seen one with this dial notation.

Chris, I agree with Mike ca 1800.
