Schatz W3 Repair Problem

I've overhauled about twenty clocks of various kinds at this point but there is one issue I've not been able to deal with, as I don't know how to approach it: with a chime/time/strike movement, how is one to remove the four-pointed wheel off the minute hand, the one that trips the chime/strike trains? The wheel/star is clearly pressed on the shaft, but it's tight enough to resist my efforts to remove it. Can't bang on the end of the shaft for fear of ruining the minute hand shaft's threads for the nut, so I'm at a loss. Clearly, there is a safe and good way to do this, but it eludes me. Thanks for casting light in the darkness, whoever helps me out.

I don't remove them unless that hole needs bushed - which it often does. Just heat it up with a butane or similar torch and it should slide right off. A couple of paint can openers used on opposite sides like pry bars keeps it from bending the arbor.

Thanks, those are excellent ideas. And you're right, that pivot hole often needs a bit of help.

If I have a need to tap or press on a threaded stud I protect the thread with a nut or nuts before applying the knockometer. Saves having to file out the damage afterwards :).

I had a bad experience using a puller in the past, on one using a tapered pin to secure the minute hand.
The puller had to apply so much force, that it partially closed the hole in the shaft for the tapered pin.
Learned the hard way to not only install a nut on the threaded arbors, but to also insert a pin if it isn't threaded.

I use my drill press to get those buggers off. Use a piece of pipe to support the plate, hand nut installed you then press the minute arbor down. into the pipe. heat helps.
